AOD Membership, etc.

Hi All,

I'm preparing to join a few more credit unions to build banking relationships in preparation for great personal and business credit, savings and loan products in the future.

I know AOD asks for POI when applying for a credit card. However, does anyone know if they also ask for income documents when you apply for membership as well?

I'm considing the following CUs, but would like to know if any one can share recent DPs regarding if they use do a soft/hard pull for membership. Also, I want to make sure whatever they pull they do not use it later for future approvals. My concern is that I don't want to wait to apply if being a member these next 6 months will help with my approvals. However, I also will have more income in the next 6 months and do not want to hinder my chances either because I initially gained membership with a lower income.

  • Alliant
  • First Tech
  • AOD
  • NASA
  • NIH - I've read that they are great for businesses in the medical field. Has anyone used them in busineses outside of the medical field?

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

I applied for the VS at the same time as membership with AOD, so I had show POI.

I don't think you would have to show POI just for membership though.

I'm a member of Navy and Penfed also and no POI was required for a membership with them.

I can give you some answer I just can't remember if it was a HP or SP for these banks.  I have all of them except Alliant and First Tech.

AOD is pretty conservative.  When I say that they do not like alot of open credit cards.  The Rep told me after I applied (they did a hard pull) that I would probably get turned down if I asked for a credit card.   I have over 20 credit cards.  For AOD that's too many credit cards so if you only have few right now and you want to apply with them I would make them my first ones.  Can't remember which they pulled it was either EX or EQ.

NASA I've had for a few years never applied for a credit card.   There cards aren't all that exciting and I don't know if they are known for giving out big CLs that's why I haven't even bothered with them.  Can't remember if they pulled anyone or not to open.

NIH is another one like NASA.  I opened an account but have yet to apply for credit.  I heard their credit cards are outsourced thru another company forgot which one that is.  Can't remember if they did a SP or HP I'm going to bet it was a SP as I would have applied for a credit card since they were pulling credit anyhow.   Now that I think of it NASA was probably the same as I would have applied for a credit card if they HP me for membership.

Also depending on what you're looking for I like Affinity Credit Union.  Open to everyone.  They did HP me for membership but I was able to use that HP to apply for a line of credit they gave me 15K.  Had probably over 6 INq at the time and 6 new open accounts.  Did apply for a credit card as the line of credit I liked better.

DCU is another good one.  They HP for membership, open to anyone and has by far the best car loan rates.   I used my HP for membership to apply for the car refinance and to apply for a credit card both of which I got approved.

I have NIH Credit Card and membership. I am just using their credit products and membership but not in the scientific field. I am sure they are desinged for members of scientific community but they cater to several other categories outside the Scientific community. They are like any other credit union. Give them a try and see if you like them.

I have NIH Secured Visa card and they pulled EQ for me. It used to be only for members in Medical / Scientific community and have to show the emploument verification working in the field. Now they have opened up to every one and I am able to get into NIH CU. They are okay to deal with. They out sourced Credit card products to PSU a company in PA which handles credit cards for many CUs in the country.

@Anonymous Thank you! I appreciate you providing these details. Is there a reason you decided to not open an account with First Tech or Alliant?

@Anonymous Ideally I'm looking for CUs that have great CCs, rates, LOCs and just overall great finance products so I can use them in the future. I'll be opening a business account soon so it's nice if I can also find one that has great business products as well. Thanks, yes I have DCU. I'm a fan of being able to put money there for 6% HYSA. Glad you mentioned their car loan rates for whenever I decide I want another car note...which I don't want anytime soon...unless I buy a new car for a car rental business.
