Agreed -- Alliant isn't offering anything like wow special. I am moving away from them too.
I've been banking with Alliant since I was a kid (and when they were still called United Airlines Credit Union) and they have served me well throughout all these years. Although they started to slash the savings rates this year. Went from 1.something percent to 0.684.
I'll add that PenFed's Tech leaves a lot to be desired.
Hello all, first time poster, long time lurker.
If you can, go with Navy Federal. They have been rock solid for many years.
One thing I didn't notice in the excellent Penfed write-up is the 6 business day hold on any monies in their premium savings accounts. I was using this account with them before I got an Ally Account - at one point I needed the money. 6 business days later I could finally get it.
Now I basically use their 5% at the pump gas card (have since 2008 or so) that they no longer offer. Good bank, just not on the same tier as NFCU.
Alliant I've had for a while, and like others said - nothing extraordinary about them except for their financial management tool (like Mint almost). Has an excellent cashflow calendar that shows you exactly what should be in your account after income & bills.

The only thing that keeps me at alliant is them being a good account transfer hub. Haven't found one as easier.
I will say that alliant has gone downhill, especially when they closed branches. saying they are conservative is an insult to conservative banks. They are much worse. As others have said, they have no loan products that are worthwhile. for a CU like them which is like 100% online now, I would expect better rates.
I did a series of tests - Ally is even faster once you've been there for a bit (maybe 90 days?). Plus, Ally has Zelle. So for smaller amounts, near instant transfers. But Alliant certainly isn't a bad way to go - don't know if you've tried Ally - I was impressed how fast the ACH in/out got after I'd been there a bit. Plus they have the cool savings buckets too.

I belong to both. They're both pretty good. I find myself using PenFed a lot more because its revolving credit products were more up my alley.
Although I haven't used customer service much with either of them, my recollection is that PenFed's was better... less wooden.
I've liked PenFed's website more over the years, but Alliant recently upgraded its website and I haven't had much occasion to test it.
The big negative with PenFed's checking account is the possible $10 monthly maintenance fee, but I avoid it by making ACH transfers totalling $500 or more into the account.

Let's not stray too far from the thread's focus on Penfed vs Alliant - thanks for your cooperation.
It may have strayed, but this was helpful to me and possibly other members, so thanks! ![]()
