I will have zero use for the account, but I do have use for the $250. 

I was pleased that they explicitly specify that you only have to keep the account open until you receive your bonus

Thanks for the heads up, @CreditCuriosity.  Amex sent me an email on Thursday morning regarding this limited-time bonus offer.  I will definitely be opening a new checking account for this.  I agree that the bonus is not quite as sweet as what Capital One is offering, but it is another easy one to obtain.  And as was the case with Capital One, the new Amex account will be easy to manage because I already have a credit card account and their savings account.
