Find a good insurance broker!
I found one, they shopped hundreds of Insurance Companies ..
They ended up putting me with Mercury Insurance,
I pay around a little over $400 for (2) cars per year.
Less than 1/2 of what I had paid before.
@M_Smart007 It figures, the best drivers get the best rates! There ought'a be a law!
Best rates doesn't always mean cheapest rates!
Our policy (Travelers) is two drivers (both 25+), clean records, two accidents (both times the other party was cited) and our insurance for one car is around $2,200/year. Happy with our policy, though. In both accidents, we had a concierge basically take care of everything. Offered to pick up car and took care of all repairs and paperwork/phone calls with other insurance company. They similarly make minor things like chipped windshields easy to deal with, down to calling up and making the appointments at a glass shop (or house call).
It'd be a rip-off if I never used it, but once you actually have to file a claim, my experience has been that the cheapo insurance companies (General, Geico, etc) are quick to weasel out of responsibility, lowball claims, and otherwise leave the entire hassle as an exercise to the policyholder.
If rates are the one and only factor in making the choice of who to go with, it obviously won't be a good fit.
@iced your points are good!
My comment on @M_Smart007 was soley intended for the purpose of needling him and not intended for serious purposes. ![]()

@Anonymous I concur with @M_Smart007 .
Find a good broker. In addition, find a company that offers annual premiums.
For example: I live in Virginia, and our family has a home/auto bundle.
My younger brother lives with me and had an accident about 2yrs ago.
Since then, no other accidents. No moving violations/tickets. Nothing.
Our premiums were still set to double to roughly $2,300 a year. Working with
our broker, he set us up with Northern Neck Insurance for $700 per year.
And that's an annual premium. Not 6 months, renew and pay a higher premium.
Northern Neck only insures Virginia drivers, and both of our cars are now paid in full.
Because we hold clear titles, we can carry less insurance which lowers our premiums.
NNIns has an A- (Excellent) rating with AM Best, and I never would've known about
them without a broker. A good broker will save you $$$ and give you peace of mind.
I'm not sure where you live, but a broker in your state will find companies like Northern Neck
that you've never heard of, they don't advertise like the big boys, and who are safe/highly rated.
So let a good broker perform all the due diligence so you don't have to. That's why they exist.
Thanks for reaching out. I hope you and your family stay safe! ![]()

I've never been with the general, and based on their comercials I never will. I wouldn't lump geico in with what you call the cheapos, when i had my hit and run accident they handled it very smoothly. I was even out of town at the time it happend and were very easy to deal with. Took it into the shop when i got back home and that process was smooth and painless as well.
Perhaps your experience was worse, but it doesn't mean it's that way for everyone. Just as eating at a restaraunt can be vastly different for each individual.

I have to agree on the cheap mention. I've only ever had 2 different insurance companies. Geico and AAA of socal. Geico's customer service is freaking awesome, and super easy to deal with. AAA because of the shops I usually work with in case of accidents or anything else needed. I might end up back with Geico after my policy is due in January.
Mercury Auto Ins. sent me partial refund due to Covid-19
They will also send one next month as well.
Hey!
I had progressive insurance for the past six months. My last car accident was 4 years ago. Six months ago progressive was the lowest insurance I could find. Then I was a 34 year old male with a 2019 vehicle. My previous insurance premium for six months was $1091. I paid it in full. When I got my renewal notice progressive wanted $1577. Nothing has changed since, but my age. I'm now 35 as of May 13th but the renewal was before my birthday.
So I began browsing new insurance companies. Coincidentally and ironically, I received an email from NASA FCU starting they have insurance with Travelers. I did a quote and they quoted me $916 for six months. Needless to say my search was over. I definitely say look into your credit unions for auto insurance.
@Mr_Mojo_Risin wrote:I got a really discount for Geico from my NFCU membership. Saved me almost 50$ a month.
Thank you for this! Our Progressive insurance last June was $573, and even though it was due for December at $553, we just went with Geico, and paid $448. The NFCU discount came to be $23. If it stays like that for the next term, $210/yr in savings is not bad at all. I love this forum! Even though its main focus is achieving a healthy credit file, there are savings tips everywhere! Thank you again!
