BECU- and financial crimes unit

Hope this is the right section for this post. Does anyone know the window to when you are fairly safe from financial crimes ? I recently opened membership with them and had to verify bank account statements and ss card to get in. I then applied for a visa and was approved for 18k. I have opened a savings account and checking account and would like to add the loc to the checking but I'm not sure if doing too much too quick is what gets them involved or if it's random and is there a time frame when you are safe ? Didnt find too many post outside of having to deal with financial crimes when someone was out of state and opened a new card with them but I saw a pattern that alot of them had also applied for the loc. Just trying to minimize them noticing me. Thanks.

@CaptinVantage,

BECU's "financial crimes unit" clown-face.pngis a little excessive ...IMO

I had to deal with them initially, .. was not a pleasant experience.pounding head against wall.gifpounding head against wall.gif

Others had their checking savings "frozen" .. I only opened with minimum amount's,

as I had read about all their silly games.

Once you get past their gung-ho "financial crimes unit" .. should be fairly smooth sailing.

I have not opened a LOC, as I did not want to trigger the "MOB" again. (nor would I .. open one)

I only opened a $40K VISA back in Dec. 2019.

I do not run any money through their checking / savings. (combined amount less than $100)

I had to snail mail a TON of documents to them. , felt it was beyond ridiculous.

I guess if you live in their geographical area, you can go into a branch. That was NOT an option for Me.

Others may sing their praises, I don't!

Hope that helps!

Joined becu 7 months ago. Approved my membership and applied for a cc, Approved. At 18k. About a week later came the document request. DL, social security card, 2 years tax returns..AND 2 consecutive years of paystubs with no gaps. Ummm, see ya. I can understand much and maybe a month of paystubs. 2 years without gaps was too excessive for me.

Re: BECU- and financial crimes unit

When I saw the subject I thought you were talking about FinCEN (the Dept of Treasury FInancial Crimes Enforcement Network) and  once involved you are probably never safe from them!   The penalty for not filing a needed form on time (without a very limited set of mitigating factors) is 50% of the entire account.

So without knowing anything more, I would bet the BECU version is very benign in comparison!

(Disclaimer: I have had no problem filing with them for myself and my daughter, even when having to file a 1040-X to correct mistakes related to that form)

Re: BECU- and financial crimes unit

CaptinVantage,

I had to go through the hoops with Financial Crimes Department about a week after I joined.  I had to send in documents twice, and was finally approved.  Right now I just have a checking account, savings account, and a CD with them. I don't a a LC or credit card with them.

I'm assuming you closed the card based on that life changing request?
