I'm learning there is a bunch out there. For these purposes, NFCU is a great institution but not everyone has access. I'd recommend the Schwab Bank High Yield Investor Checking® account. Unlimited ATM fees GLOBALLY, meaning you can withdraw cash in another country, also with no ATM fee. You are required to link a Brokerage account BUT not required to keep any large amounts of cash in it, just have one open in your name.

CARDS:
AMEX CS Plat | NSL -- Chase Freedom Flex | $19,000
AMEX Gold | NSL -- Citi Double Cash | $10,000
AMEX HH NAF | $1,000 -- Uber Visa | $5,000
CSR | $29,000 -- USAA Plat | $8,000
USAA AMEX | $23,000 -- MB Boundless | $11,900 -- CFU | $3,600 -- PenFed Pathfinder | $10,000 -- MS Plat | NSL

BANKS:
NFCU | USAA | PenFed | Schwab Bank | First Bank | Chase

This here is my recommendation too. The convenience factor of going to ANY ATM in your vicinity when you need it at a moments notice is unmatched with Schwab. Whether they charge $1 or $100 to withdraw money, it will be refunded to you every month, no questions asked.

Schwab Checking is greatly complimented with a Credit Union as well since Schwab doesn't take deposits. If you can get NFCU, you'd be pretty much set with a really great combination. If you can't get NFCU, there's plenty of highly recommended CU's that folks recommend here that are easy to get into.

Re: Best "Everyday" Checking Account?

Thank you EVERYONE!  I was considering NFCU, but then I came accross info about them FREEZING your accounts for random reasons, even if you've been with them for years. (I have been with them for 8 years)

I would love to go with Alliant FCU, but my wife uses that for her personal checking, and we want to keep things separate and simple.  I was willing to use Ally Bank, but I read that they were caught discriminating against people of color a few years back, and I can't in good concious use them now. (Though, the people involved have probably long been fired...I don't know.)

I will check into DCU though!  Scwab looks VERY attractive, but if they don't accept deposits in some way outside of Direct Deposits or ACH, that may be a problem at some point.  THANK YOU everyone for the suggestions and insight so far!  Appreciate them and you greatly!!!

I humbly recommend having combination of Schwab and DCU (if that is who you want to go with.) That alone can cover your unlimited withdrawals from anywhere in the world and also be banking with a reputable and proven CU that this community recommends at the very least. DCU for deposits and Schwab for withdrawals. Setup ACH pushes for both accounts and it's very good. I've been doing this for a number of years and have been very satisfied.

Re: Best "Everyday" Checking Account?

How easy would that be to do?  Could I make it automatic?

It's very easy. I have my Schwab account scheduled to push money into my savings every two weeks paycheck. Most financial institutions and their websites have an "external accounts" tab on their website or app in my experience. You give them the account and routing numbers and then they do test deposits and withdrawals. Once those are complete and verified by you, you're set to move money between accounts. Makes things very simple and easy to money around.
