With the linked apps: do any of them allow you to split transactions from purchases at places like Costco or Walmart? Often times these need to be split up into multiple categories.

ynab - yes.  I do it regularly since I'm looking for trends and need accurate data.

Re: Budget apps vs. spreadsheet

Found apps to work a lot better for me. Not that I can't do it manually, but it usually isn't what I look forward to doing in a day. Also love the convenience of doing it with a tiny device in the palm of my hand.

Different folks for different strokes though.

Re: Budget apps vs. spreadsheet

I have been using a spreadsheet for 10+ years now and it has gotten overly complex. The nerd in me enjoys updating it, evolving it, and such but now that I have multiple checking, savings, and credit cards, it’s getting much more difficult to keep up. I tried an app last year and linked a few accounts to it, but I didn’t like it at all so I removed everything and deleted.

I’ll have to check some of these apps to see if it fits my needs better, but I prefer not giving account access. Otherwise, my spreadsheet has been completely reliable for me. Perhaps what I really need to do is simplify and consolidate my accounts!
