COVID-19 Budget and Expenses

Usually have total spend of ~5k a month and our spending actually went up in March due to making adjustments to grocery buying habits, etc. However, this month our overall spending has decreased by ~40% overall. We're spending a lot more on food but a lot less everywhere else.

Just curious as to how everyone's spending and budgeting has changed due to the Coronavirus?

I have also noticed that our spending this month is down. No eating out, very little gas and no pointless trips to the store to buy what we don't really need, but i wish we were down 40%, we are "only" down about 20%. Not hard to see why the economy is in such dire straights.

Re: COVID-19 Budget and Expenses

I can tell you that, My restaurant and gasoline spend is down about 90% (combined)

Vacation spend is down 100% .. as I would normally take a small 5-7 day vacation in late March.

Our restaurant spend may be down a little bit, but has stayed steady relative to other categories. We still try to order a sizeable takeout/delivery meal 1x a week to support local restaurants. As far as gas, I was filling up every 1.5 to 2 weeks before COVID broke out; now, just checked, and the last trip to the gas station was on March 11th. Probably have enough gas to get through another 2-3 weeks, which would be about 2 months. No wonder oil is cratering.

My gas expenditure is down because all our national parks are closed so I can't go hiking.

My dining/take-out spending is up because in our community, folks are rallying to help out the businesses in our International District (Asian merchants) affected by coronavirus.

Re: COVID-19 Budget and Expenses

Now that stores have stuff back in stock, my spending is back to normal. I'm actually probably spending a bit more because I'm ordering dry storage items well before I run out of them now.

I have never been able to stomach the fees for food delivery services though so I didn't do much of that before and I don't see that changing. As long as Marie Callender's and Evol's frozen bowls are being stocked in store freezers, I'm fine.

I am fortunate in that neither myself nor my roommates took any kind of direct financial hit as a result of this nonsense so for us, it's mostly business as usual other than having to live on top of each other for the foreseeable future (both roommates were informed that they will be spending the summer at minimum working from home).

WFH had me down 50% for the month of March.  No travel expense or dining out.  But April will be net net.  The meat processing plant closures induced me to place an order from 'Butcher Box'.  Monday in a cleaning fit, I wiped the tv too hard with a lysol wipe.  This hurt the LCD panel.  Oops!  ABT delivered  a new television today.

Re: COVID-19 Budget and Expenses

Oh what a great topic, OP. Thanks

I'm way down. Since I'm telecommuting, there's no cost for public transportation, eating breakfast and lunch out, buying snacks, no hair salon. I'm loving it.

Re: COVID-19 Budget and Expenses

Gas spend has definitely gone down for me. Currently WFH unless there's a problem I can't fix remotely. Been averaging 1 day per week at the plant instead of 5-6. 90mi round trip commute.

Grocery spend has gone up slightly. Because a) I've taken over grocery shopping while wife still has to go into work, not as good at couponing and finding the best deals and b) things can still be hit or miss at the grocery store, sometimes having to buy the name brand or more expensive products if that's all they have. It's not a crazy difference, but definitely some.

Neither of us has been spending much of our budgeted "fun money". No going out to eat. Minimal ordering in. Getting ready to move so don't need to bring any new toys/gadgets into the house. Been getting away from the "Oh neat!", click button, Amazon box 1-2 days later.
