Re: Check deposit

IMO the dollar amount of the check could make the difference.

If it's a small check from grandma made out to both, simply both sign the back and shove it in the ATM and call it a day.  Same for a small check made out to a child... I've never seen a bank have an issue with this (again, assuming the amount is fairly trivial).

On the other hand, if it's a $100k insurance check made out to both, I would then expect the bank to look at things more closely.  In this case I would definitely check with a branch manager before moving forward.

Re: Check deposit

Any good teller paying attention if it is $100+ would ask that both parties are present to ensure that both owners of the check/money are negociating the money as both have agreed. The teller and the bank don't want to get into the middle of any conflicts with the owners of the check. Because now days you never know and the teller isn't there to determine that either.

Re: Check deposit

Like @ Uncle B said
This is all about the SIZE of the check and as @Creditfan1234 states it has to do with the EYE and diligence of the teller...(which, change based upon check amount...See above)

There are times I get 'gas money' size residual checks from a company I've done business with I'm the past
And the check is made out to a business name, I don't have a biz account for anymore

I just slide it into the ATM, when they come and nobody goes through the extra 'trouble' of kicking em back...Mind you these are checks made out to a business only NOT even my name AND the business, just the business and I slide em into my personal, just me account.... Again small checks, aren't gonna cause the needle to move or anybody to give a crap, especially via ATM

Now if there were more zeros, yeah more attention to the proper detail and procedure.

Same thing with getting a stickler in person teller or perhaps an in training teller who's being hyper viligent.
Because technically AND is and should be handled differently than OR ....

But in everyday life humans act as if...We are generally much more casual in REAL LIFE...Ppl don't want to upset clients and just assume it's OK.

I send my CC with other ppl ...My kids, ex, etc and MOST times other are able to use a CC in my name only all day long

Example, at the drive-thru I've learned if the order is under X amount ($25, I think) they ask ZERO questions...Then all of a sudden over that amount, they want I.D.

@ Walgreens the time of day and amount may have the clerk question you...So it's all relative.

But as mentioned a large insurance settlement check... Most likely would NOT be cashed with ONE person present unless the person handling the transaction is very new, which would still be caught because normally a 2nd person signs off on the BIG checks, just in case...These places love CYA overkill when the AMOUNT 'means' something but under a threshold....You could STEAL all day long (just saying)

I think most tellers would just assume the wording is OR and treat handling as they would an account where there 2 names assuming either party is authorized to write or receive items....
The devil is always in the details, do we REALLY expect the masses to be great at the details?

Good luck with that😎

Re: Check deposit

Also, I agree with the ATM probably not catching it but there are people in the back that review thosw deposits. Just in case the teller does catch it and ask for more details or steps to be taken please accept it graciously and understand they are doing their job and protecting themselves and the bank in the process.
