ChexSystems and Credit Karma/Transunion?

I just pulled my ChexSystems report, as I have done for several years to make sure there is nothing shady going on. However, since January 2023 there is a 'soft' inquiry once a month from Transunion, for benefit of Credit Karma. I although I've had a CK account for a few years, I don't know if this is related to that. Other than that, no surprises or negatives on the report.

Has anyone else seen this? Any idea what it is for? I looked around online but didn't see anything...I may eventually give them a call but wanted to see if there's any additional info here first. Thanks, everybody!.

Re: ChexSystems and Credit Karma/Transunion?

It looks shady, and such SP can be a sign of having an active checking account with them under your name. I would give both CK/TU calls for clarifications.

I have a CU membership and in the last Chex report, I saw they had a SP a few months after opening the account. But it was only one SP over the period of half a year. I may pull my recent report again to check.

Re: ChexSystems and Credit Karma/Transunion?

ChexSystems collects information relating to closed bank accounts and scores you on issues with those accounts such as over draws, bad (returned) checks, etc. It doesn't track information such as balance amounts regarding active bank accounts or credit accounts, such as credit cards, loans, and lines of credit. While their information has no bearing on your credit scores, lenders can use your ChexSystems score to consider approvals. A low ChexSystems score for example, could factor as a reason for a denial. Perhaps CK uses it in someway in help generating their "approval odds".

Re: ChexSystems and Credit Karma/Transunion?

I have Credit Karma.

I checked ChexSystems, and received a score of 9999, meaning no activity.

I would look into this, even though it might be nothing.

Re: ChexSystems and Credit Karma/Transunion?

CK should NOT do any SP on Chex without consent, especially for non-members. If you have not frozen the Chexsystems profile, you need to do it.

For my case, I already had a checking account with the credit union that I mentioned and I guess, they did one SP to get updated on my financial situation. That is almost OK, since I am already a member. But it is not OK for the other institutions to do SP on Chex without consent. Even for me, CK is welcome to do SP on EQ/TU to provide free weekly credit reports but they should not be authorized to do SP on my Chex. If they do, there can be possible lawsuits. I ordered my Chex report and should receive the written letter soon.

Please update us on the follow-ups to CK/TU.

Re: ChexSystems and Credit Karma/Transunion?

Another thing to consider is that they may be pulling your info using the prescreening authorization reason for the SPs. Since ChexSystems is considered a consumer reporting agency, they would fall under the same guidlines.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), consumer credit reporting agencies are permitted to include your name on lists used by creditors or insurers to make prescreened offers of credit or insurance that are not initiated by you.

The FCRA also provides you the right to opt out, which prevents consumer credit reporting agencies from providing your credit file information for prescreened offers. If you choose to opt out, your name and address will be removed from the lists these offers are based on. You may opt out with the nationwide credit bureaus at 888.5 OPTOUT (888.567.8688). You may opt out with ChexSystems at 877.OPTOUT 5 (877.678.6885). You may also click here to submit an online request to opt out with ChexSystems.

Re: ChexSystems and Credit Karma/Transunion?

They may do the personal data collection under also the "prospective customer" category. For example, I was never a customer of T-mobile while in the recent data breach, I got a letter for the T-mobile settlement lawsuit that my personal data with T-mobile got impacted and they included me in the settlement. My inquiries on the significant personal data collection of "non-customer" people did not go anywhere and it seems that it is legit even in some states like CA. European Union has much better personal data collection regulations, which reduces also any personal data exposure in case of data breaches.

Re: ChexSystems and Credit Karma/Transunion?

Thanks all for the responses. I did reach CK by chat a couple of times, but they were of zero help shedding any light on this. I also submitted an online form but just got a generic canned response (and apparently they don't do phone customer service). There are still some other routes I can take, and I am not in a rush...I am just curious what they are looking for each of the last four months since I have been with CK for a few years with no inquiries at all. I also realize I may have agreed to something in the T&C when I signed up.
