Experience w Citi Brokerage?

Hi all,

I'm about to grab the Citi checking bonus and I have the Strata Elite as my main card. I like using the Citi app and have never had any problems with them as a bank. Does anyone have experience with their brokerage/investing side? Thoughts about it?

Re: Experience w Citi Brokerage?

I gave the Citigold relationship tier a lot of thought for a while, mostly for the $200 subscription rebate program.  Annually, they'll reimburse your membership or subscription fees for options like prime, hulu, spotify, costco, etc., up to $200/year.

But now I don't see it on their website.  I only see "Enjoy Complimentary Access to select cultural attractions through Citigold® Culture Pass2".  I wonder if they don't offer the rebate program any more?

Toxik, sorry, I don't know the answer to your question.  But, if you decide to go for it, please let us know what you think!  Smiley Happy

Re: Experience w Citi Brokerage?

There's two brokerage platforms; Citi Self-Invest & Citi Personal Wealth Management. The latter is more feature-rich if you want to go beyond simply buying stocks & ETFs, so keep that in mind. Despite the name, you can ask to use the Citi PWM brokerage on your own and avoid paying any wealth management fees. That's what I use.

The brokerage experience is okay. It's not horrible, but it's not great either. Important info and functions are buried under layers of menus and the web design is generally a little obtuse, but it's perfectly functional. They have access to most of the funds you could ask for too. Stocks, ETFs, & mutual funds can be purchased online, but individual bonds can only be purchased by phone. You aren't charged commission for buying stocks, bonds, or funds if you self-manage your account. I don't personally mind any of this but it's all pretty antiquated, especially for such a large bank.

I'd say if you like Citi and want to keep things consolidated, it's a decent brokerage experience.

CT, I wasn't going to assume you were at Gold level but, since you placed it in your sig, I can ask, lol.  How do you like the subscription rebate program?  Are they still offering it to new customers, do you know?  And is the Culture Pass worth anything good?  At quick glance, it seemed to only offer museums, etc. in NY?

Yeah, happy to help! The subscription rebate program is alive and well as far as I know. Once you become a Citigold member, you can request it from your relationship banker & they'll get it setup for you. I only just became a Citigold member recently so I haven't gotten around to setting it up yet, but my banker suggested it to me a few weeks ago.

The museum pass gets you into a few museums in New York, but I live in Boston so I haven't had the opportunity to use it either unfortunately. From what I've seen online, people generally seem to speak highly about both of those items.

Re: Experience w Citi Brokerage?

On a related but different note, I have (self-directed) brokerage accounts with US Bank and Fidelity.  I will say, I like the Fidelity interface and layout much better.  And they also have some pretty good exclusive zero-fee Fidelity ETFs / Mutual Funds.  Yes, zero-fee.  For instance, Fidelity's FZROX is nearly identical to the big boy Vanguard's VOO but with no fee.  The only negative to that is your account is less mobile as you would need to sell your Fidelity-exclusive ETFs / MFs if you every wanted to move your account to a different bank.  Which wouldn't really be a problem in a tax sheltered account such as a Roth IRA but their could be tax implications if outside of a tax sheltered account if you sell.  But the investments I have with Fidelity now, I'll be keeping there for a long time so I don't worry too much about it.  I'm taking advantage of the no cost ETFs / MFs!  Smiley Happy

I had an account with Betterment and didn't like it so I got out.  I still have an account with Wealthfront and I like it ok, but it's not really self-directed, per se.  I chose a single one size fits all fund, put in $10,000, set a monthly contribution to it, and I forget about it.

I was thinking of moving everything over to Fidelity from Schwab cause I wanted the higher yield on my "checking" account but Fidelity doesn't offer zelle which is how I get rent from my roommates so that idea is dead for now.

I also had an account with Betterment and switched over to Wealthfront. I just use their cash management as a savings account for now but am thinking about closing that especially if I go back to Citi. Trying to find a one stop shop (yes i know it's advised against) but zelle and high yield seem to be impossible to find together in a single account.

Re: Experience w Citi Brokerage?

Say guys, how about fees for stock options? I have fidelity, who charges $.65 for options, as does etrade. I do all my option trading with robin hood and moomoo, who don't charge.

Pretty sure buying / selling individual stocks with Fidelity is free.  Same with buy / sell ETFs and Mutual Funds.

I don't think there's any harm at all in keeping your money / investments with one 'shop'.  Your cash is FDIC insured up to $250,000 and your investments (not FDIC insured) are the same no matter which brokerage you use.  Holding 50 shares of Vanguard VDE is the same if you use Vanguard to buy the shares or Fidelity to buy the shares.   So, unless you have over $250,000 in cash or one institution happens to offer an exclusive investment option, I see no harm in putting all your money / investments in one place.  Good luck.
