Funeral Cost

I am currently trying to find options to cover the cost of my Uncles funeral. He suddenly passed last Sunday. The hospital has already done the autopsy so time is limited. I wanted to secure the Funeral home for the end of this week but I can’t come up with the $4000 they are asking me to put down. I created a gofundme and I am praying I raise enough to cover at least half.

I was looking at personal loans and wondering if it would be worth it to try and secure one? Or would it be a mistake? I’m all over the place. On top of my Uncles passing I have the flu and I feel absolutely awful. Not up for the holidays 😢🥺

Re: Funeral Cost

Sorry for your loss. Does the 4k cover everything? Funeral service, burial service, cemetery plot, headstone? Personal loan would potentially be the fastest option. What about Will/estate/insurance? Sometimes there are provisions that cover this

Re: Funeral Cost

4K is half the cost which holds the day at the funeral home. I picked the cheapest of everything and still came out to almost $8000 total. Unfortunately my Uncle did not have anything to leave behind, no insurance, no estate. I also suspect money was taking from his bank accounts but that will be handled accordingly.

I really don’t want to cremate him. Im so sad 😞

Re: Funeral Cost

Was he a veteran by chance?

There could be a national cemetery he could get buried in for a fraction of the cost.

Re: Funeral Cost

Also . . . this may seem a little blunt, but would he want you to be going into debt over this?

(My Dad would have pitched a fit if we did something like that. We cremated him and buried his ashes at the Vets' cemetary for just under $1000, I believe.)

Re: Funeral Cost

No he did not serve. But you are 100% right. My Uncle wouldn’t have wanted me to go into debt 😢 I just feel guilt. He passed away alone in his room. His last moments he suffered alone. Ugh

My ex husband passed a year and a half ago, was disabled and didn't leave behind any life insurance as well.  My daughter took out a personal loan to pay for his cremation, which was just a "simple" cremation and that was 3900.00 in Massachusetts.  Didn't include service, headstone, plot.  As another poster asked, would your uncle want you to go into debt over this?

There was just a memorial service held at church, and my daughter has him proudly displayed on the mantle.  Is there anyone else, cousins and such, that could help you bear the cost of this?  You shouldn't have to carry this all on your own.  As far as of time being of the essence, the funeral home was wonderful and allowed us a week or so before we decided what she was going to do.  It was a very stressful time.

With that being said, I am so very sorry for your loss, no time of year is good to lose a loved one, this time of year is one of the worst. (Mom passed two days after Christmas so I know) Smiley Sad

Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for your loss.

Re: Funeral Cost

Sketchy on details but there may be some funds from Social Security and the VA does contribute (assuming age and Veteran status). Note, some one up thread already mentioned internment in a National Cemetery and that would be for a very low amount (if applicable).

Best wishes on giving your Uncle a proper burial!
