How forgiving is Chase ?

I recently received an offer in the mail to open a checking account with Chase. With qualifing direct deposit, etc. I would receive $300.

It wasn't until I received a pop up when applying that I already had an account and needed to login to complete my application. I completly forgot I had a Chase checking and savings account in 2016.

I come to find out after several phone calls to Chase, that the checking account I had was closed with a negative balance, although they say that I did pay it in full ( I assume after it was closed I paid it, I honestly don't remember).

Because of this, I am only eligable to open a checking and or savings account in person.

I am rebuilding my credit so one of my 2026 credit goals is to be able to apply for the Freedom Rise or the Freedom Flex card. I know having an established relationship helps with Chase approvals, especially when I get to the point of being able to apply for the Saphire Preferred and Reserve ( that's more than likely a 2027 goal but I will get there!).

Does anyone know how forgiving Chase is? The nearest branch is a drive from where I currently live now and I'd hate to drive an HR only to be turned down for a checking account. I spoke to someone both in the regular customer service and the collections department and they just keep telling me I have to go in person, with 2 forms of ID,  and that all applications are subject to approval.

Chase does forgive.  How long that takes is generally dependent on how badly they were burned.

In your case, being you addressed the past negative balance, their requirement for you to apply in person has more to do with ID verification than anything else.

Chase is one of the more forgiving and generous providers out there.  Between all of their programs, a couple, P1 and P2, can literally earn thousands of free dollars, in opportunity every year or two.

They want you as much as you should want them.

$XXX,XXX in credit lines.
Multiple months in free credit reward vacations.
$X,XXX in bank rewards in only 12 months.

Take nothing I say as financial advice. DYODD.
