I plan on moving overseas within a year. I will keep my US stock account and probably one bank. What should i do with the CCs? I was planning on keeping one but closing all the others... while I don't really plan on coming back, one never knows, so i still want to keep a good credit score. Any of you have suggestions or pitfalls i should be aware of? Thanks!
I worked overseas for a while. I had a work visa before I left. Don't assume you can legally work where you're going. Kept my us bank and credit cards. My pay was deposited in my us account. I used a visa card for everything in europe, let them do currency exchange.
You might also want a debit card with no fees to get local cash. Fidelity cma account has one with all atm fees reimbursed world wide.
If you're planning on staying, you should try to establish local banking as well. You'll need docs that show legal status there.
I don't see any point in not maintaining a bank in the us, regardless. It is the center of the banking world.
That sounds reasonable to me. You could also ask your bank about transferring your account to a local version of the card. If it's a big international bank, this might be possible.
Another thing to remember is that rewards on US cards tend to be much better than foreign ones. For example, the "official" card for amazon.co.uk gives 1% on.amazon purchases and 0.5% on everything else. (Both unlimited so there is that!l) So providing keeping a us bank account is not too much work (and funding it of course) a US card with no FTF can be very useful. Need to have a us address for safety
