I had an Uncle in the Navy back during Desert Storm and a grandfather who served during WWII in the Navy. He past about 15 years ago though and I dont know what type of documentation I would be able to provide.
I see so many people recommend them but I am finding it hard to produce a relative. ![]()
You're eligible since your grandfather was in the service. Call in and become a member.

Ive heard some say that they just gave the info and the NFCU was able to pull it up on their computer to grant membership, but having the physical copy would be the safest route.
I wouldn't worry about the physical copy unless NFCU asks for it. I was able to sign up with just telling them my father's name and branch of service. I was told earlier that almost all the time that is all that is required.

The caveat is that there have been a few reported cases of NFCU circling back after some period of time and requesting submission of proof of eligibilty then freezing the accounts until said proof was provided.
I don't recall if there was any common denominator established as to what may have triggered the requests, but it should be understood that they do at least occasionally check and follow up.

I just joined with a deceased maternal grandfather, army/WWII.
The rep advised me when we started that application that IF I need to provide proof I would need my birth certificate, my mother's birth certificate (to connect me to my grandfather), and then his discharge paperwork which could be requested from Veteran's Affairs if needed. I ended up not needing to provide the proof, but basically as long as you're being truthful (I'm sure you are), you could get what you needed if you needed to provide it.
