I make regular transfers from my Chase checking account to my Navy checking account with no problem. I called when I couldn't figure it out and was told how to set it up (read: through Chase's portal, and it can only be done from checking to checking).

I write a check from my external account to cash and deposit in NFCU mobile app and the money is there next day.
Never ever an issue.
Wow! Great idea and easy-peasy! Thank you.
I have a NF branch within driving distance of my house, so I usually drive over there, withdraw cash, and then drive to the Chase, Wells Fargo or Bank of America branch where I also have accounts and deposit the cash with a teller.
Yes, it takes all morning, but the funds are available in the other account the same day (because it's cash).
Joking aside, would you patronize a pizza restaurant that didn't offer crust?
@CV91915 Another issue is my auto payment option only allows me to use internal checking in which I have very little cash.
Wow.

I would recomend any member wanting this changed to call in NFCU and complain about it. With enough complaints im sure Navy would be happy to be brought to the 21st century
..as a few have mentioned, an ACH push from another checking account works for getting money into NFCU checking.
I actually prefer this approach I think.
Probably some disadvantages somehow that I don't realize, but I find it a bit more appealing not having a web of account linkages sprawling among the various financial institutions I use.
