Navy Federal Newbie Questions

I'm just now considering Navy after several years of building my profile. I don't know much about them. Can someone post the master thread I've seen mentioned about them? I can't seem to find it in search. Also, to become a member do you have to have a savings or checking account or both? That is before I try for a credit card? I ask because my local credit union requires a savings account with  $5 min. to remain open throughout membership. I should mention I believe I'm eligible through my deceased grandfather who served in the Army 1946-48 and who's enlistment info does appear on the National Achives website. Thank you.

Re: Navy Federal Newbie Questions

You can join over the phone. Give CSR a call. It should be a 15-20 minute process, longer of you want to chit-chat. They are open 24/7/365.

SP TU for membership. You'll need to keep $5 in the savings account.

Thanks for the replies. I called and became a member. About 30 mins. or so and setup savings and checking. I will look into the credit cards shortly.
