Not activating debit card

Do I really need to activate it? I opened a Redneck Bank money market account which came with a debit card. I put 5k into it as just a place to stash money for hopefully years to come. I like the 1.5% that it offers.

Re: Not activating debit card

You may have to eventually. I tried going without activating some of mine. The banks or CUs eventually contacted me. Wanting to know if the cards were lost. If I didn't activate, they'd cancel and send another.
Maybe Redneck bank won't hassle you about it. It doesn't hurt to wait and see.

Re: Not activating debit card

I don't think having an active debit card is generally required to maintain an account (of course it's subject to terms for the account in question). It's just a way to access the account like checkbooks, but if you don't use it that's unlikely to be grounds to cancel the account altogether. What you might be able to do is to request that they cancel the card on the account or not send you any new ones. I remember that my WF debit card expired a few years ago and until recently when I called to request a new one they just didn't send me a replacement at all (no idea what happened there) and my account reflected that I had no active debit card so for some banks this is possible.

Since you mention wanting to stash 5k in an account for a long time, a nice option is Insight, which offers 5% on the first 5k.

You would have to check the Redneck Bank terms of service to see if activating the debit card. It probably isn't, but I think it's a good idea to activate it and then stash it away in a sock drawer. Especially if you opened the account online activating the card confirms to the bank that your mailing address is valid and you really do have a pulse. I never use debit but I always activate a debit card and stash it away, I have probably 3-4 debit cards in my sock drawer.
