Quick Review: Discover Personal Loan

I'm still in my honeymoon period with these guys... but as you might see from this thread where I review Upstart, I'm pretty happy to be here.

Quick-Review-Upstart-personal-loan

After rebuilding aggressively for about a year and 4 months, I received a pre-qual invitation to apply from Discover. I knew I had to get out from under the other loan, but still...  I have a ton of INQs.  I called cautiously, and explained to the rep that I had some trepidation.  She basically told me that my story sounded just like her own and and those of countless other poeople she's worked with.   For just a moment I thought, "you're doing that 'treating me like I'd treat me' thing aren't you?"

my Discover FICO (TU) was at 712. I took a $6000.00 loan for 3 years at 13.99%.  No origination fee at all.  It was painless and appreciated.  I used every penny of this to discharge Upstart and pay down my 16% Lending Club loan with the rest.

The web & Mobile offerings are sound-- exactly what one would expect out of Discover.

Making extra payments was a little bit awkward.  Because I was eager to start on the right foot, I called to set up my auto-pay with a little more monthly going to principal.  For wahtever reason, I was transferred to the collection team (Slow day, maybe?)  This particular rep apparently couldn't put in a simple "monthly recurring" payment.  Instead, she added 36, individual payments in my account, one for each upcoming month.   For me to delete and do a simple recurring payment again-- when I wanted to tweak the numbers-- meant that I had to delete 35 payments to get to that point.   it was a pain, but all in all nothing to really complain about.  My huge fear was that I'd miss one, and it would charge me twice some month.

Painless, easy, no origination fee.   This organization is highly recommended.

Rebuilding is like smoking a brisket: it takes a lot of love, the right spice, and a ton of patience. You don't rush a brisket-- it goes low & slow. Sometimes, you need a crutch through the stall. In the end, the process matters.
2021 goals:
1) GARDEN until I app for Mortgage.
2) Pay Down overall revolving debt aggressively and accountably, to under 30%, including my HELOC.
3) Don't waste the gifted 0% time on the student loans.
4) Ultimately, refi the house at non-usury terms.

Agreed.  Every time I call them, whether on the lending or credit card side, they are on the ball and you actually enjoy speaking with them!  thanks for reading this stuff-- I just hope someone benefits from it down the line.
