State Department Federal Credit Union (SDFCU) Hard Pull To Join (Savings Only)?

Does anyone know if it is hard pull or soft pull to join State Department Federal Credit Union?  I have read in a few threads that is a soft pull to join if you only open a savings account.  However, all the threads I have found are several years old.

Has anyone joined in the last several months that can attest that it is still only a soft pull?

Thank you.

When I joined years ago, it was a hard pull. They also used the same pull when I applied for a Visa.

Your best bet to get the correct information is to call SDFCU's customer service department.  I think very highly of them and they have also treated me great, even when I was declined for my first Visa app with them

Re: State Department Federal Credit Union (SDFCU) Hard Pull To Join (Savings Only)?

I called early this morning and the person I talked to had no idea either way.  I called back this afternoon, and the person I spoke to said there would be no hard pull for opening either savings or checking.

Thanks again for your reply.

Re: State Department Federal Credit Union (SDFCU) Hard Pull To Join (Savings Only)?

As this board is from June I am sure you know what they pull by now. However, in case you do not here is my 2 cents. According to SDFCU they do a SP for savings and checking and naturally HPs for CCs and loans. I recently decided to open a simple savings account with them to begin establishing a relationship with them. I am very interested in their premium cash back + card to replace my Quicksilver card. But As I am in the garden now till April next year I only wanted a bank that does a SP at the moment. I apply for the savings and get not only a SP but a HP as well for an installment loan! I was a bit livid when I saw that and called to demand and answer as to why they did that. Their response was they thought I would apply for a loan so they went ahead and did a HP for me. I then Asked if it is normal to do both a SP and a HP when only applying for a savings account. They said no unless I was also applying for a loan along with it. My reply was I did not ask for a loan or a credit card yet because of the number of inquiries on my Experian which they pulled. They then declined me for a loan. DUH!!! I demanded they remove the HP or approve me for the Premium card I mentioned since they already did a HP. No, no and no was the answer. So I had them retract the HP. They complied. Maddness!!! Oh and they also declined me for a damm savings account too. Strange credit union. So be aware if you apply.

hawkins thanks for the data points. Seems I read some interesting challenges on them over time. Seeing your results brings home that likely I will let the "sleeping dog lay." Smiley Frustrated

Fwiw, my SDFCU join was also kinda along these lines, about two years back. Also resulted in no account opened; well technically opened, then closed. Couldn't verify my 50 years of ID I guess. Crazy folks there. My HP falls off in 45 days or so...  Never had so much trouble, before or since, joining a credit union.

With a dog like that, no need for a chicken, eh? lol
