I'm looking at getting a US Bank card next year, and I'm thinking about establishing a relationship via checking account to try to improve my chances. Since I won't have a card until next year (hopefully), I'm thinking about getting the lowest-tier checking account and then upgrading to the Gold checking account once I'm approved for the credit card. Has anyone here upgraded an existing US Bank checking account?

If you have a branch near you, you can apply in branch. If approved the CRC that opens your account should automatically change the status of your checking account... doesn't hurt to ask if the CRC fails to let you know of the upgrade.
Account number stays the same. You'll see a charge and a reversal on your statement for the Gold status.

As I remember it ... the no monthly fee for the US Bank Gold Checking Account requires a credit card or some other form of credit with US Bank to waive the fee. To be exact, here is the wording off their website:
You have an open U.S. Bank personal loan, line, mortgage or credit card."
Correct @Anonymous US Bank requires a credit product to waive the fee of the Gold checking account.
I was merely letting @difringe know that it is a simple process to change checking to Gold once they are approved for the credit card they hope to get next year.
The 800 number can make the upgrade, but often times they are lazy when it comes to truly helping customers get more out of their accounts... not to mention hold times can get quite lengthy.
CRC's (the person standing at the teller line) can open accounts, close accounts, handle cash transactions... even help you with a mortgage or other loan.
US Bank made a change a few years back that made it so the front line teller and the banker who used to sit behind a desk all can and do the same job... they do have what is known as a peak-time teller, and not all of then are cross trained like the full-time tellers and bankers are.

Great information! Did not know. It seems the pandemic has caused employment challenges so locally I never know when we can get assistance. Interesting your comment on laziness (wondered on this)! ![]()
Thank you all for your assistance!

Yes and it expires June 13! Promo code 2022MAY
I upgraded my checking account to a gold account through online chat. It took about 2 minutes.
