Which bank would you choose?

I am currently with Chase. Have been with them for a few years but I keep hearing you should go to credit unions or smaller banks. I am full member of both USAA and NFCU. Which one would you guys choose?

Re: Which bank would you choose?

There is a lot that goes into choosing for me. I have accounts with major banks and credit unions. At the end of the day for my checking and daily money needs I like a bank that is near by and has lots of atms for me.

Re: Which bank would you choose?

Chase is awesome! IME, they have always made every thing super easy, plus they have branches and ATMs everywhere and 24-hour phone service, which is super convenient. The interest rate on their savings accounts sucks, but 1% at an online bank is not much either. I had my car loan with a smaller, local bank and it was a nightmare. Why would you want to switch?

Both USAA and NFCU are strong when it comes to checking, but for me (personally) USAA has a slight edge for checking, at least if you're a civilian.

With USAA everything is free - literally.  Free paper checks, free ATM withdrawals at any ATM (up to 10 per month) and they will automatically reimburse the fee charged by the ATM (if any) up to $15 per month as well.  I also like that with direct deposit, you get your money a day earlier... or at least the folks in my family do.

USAA also has free ACH transfers in/out of bank accounts at other institutions, which is a plus for many folks.  Finally, if you don't have a credit account with them, you can use any MasterCard as an overdraft protection source should the need arise.  Before I had my USAA Visa, I had my Capital One MasterCard on file for OD protection... I never had to actually use it, but it was nice knowing it was there.

I keep an account with Wells Fargo for those times when I need to get a cashier's check or deposit cash, but for my day-to-day banking, USAA has been fantastic for me.  Honestly, if it weren't for the occasional need to deposit cash I would only use USAA... they're that good.

Hope this helps!

LOL my friend!  Smiley LOL

Seriously, through the years of dealing with big banks, little banks, and regional banks - most of which looked for every opportunity to nickle-and-dime me to death, I'm so happy to have an account that's actually a good deal sometimes I do sound a bit like a commercial... LOL.

My only 'regret' is that they've tightened up on the membership requirements.  At one time anybody could get a deposit account, but not anymore.  Under the current requirements, I wouldn't even be eligible, but I'm 'grandfathered' in.  In some ways they are more strict than NFCU, in some ways not as much... it can get really granular, especially when comparing the two.

Re: Which bank would you choose?

I have a checking and savings with NFCU but dont really have anything in it. I do have a NFCU cash rewards visa. I am a full member of USAA through my father but I havent used any of their products yet. I need to switch my car insurance over to them.

So with USAA .. say I deposit cash into my chase account and I want to transfer it over to USAA .. it's free ? Cuz I know with NFCU it isnt.

I do like Chase a lot but everyone is always saying to move to a credit union or to a smaller bank so you dont get hit with all the fees and also they are just better with customer service.

Yep, if you initiate the ACH transfer from your USAA account, it's completely free.  Not only that, up to a certain dollar amount they will give you instant credit for the transfer, even though it will be a couple of days until it's actually complete.

The amount likely varies based on your history, but it's really cool to be able to deposit cash into a local bank, then get on the app and do the transfer, then moments later that amount is available to use for checks, debit purchases, etc.

I use the free ACH transfers each month in the opposite direction to make my Wells Fargo account 'free'.  My direct deposit goes to USAA, then I transfer $500 to Wells, which Wells 'sees' as a direct deposit... which waives my Wells monthly fee.  It's just a few keystrokes, but it saves me $7 a month.

At the risk of sounding like a cheerleader, I have to say USAA is the best I've been able to find for checking, and certainly the best I've ever personally used.

If you are already a member do they do a credit pull to open a checking account ?

Re: Which bank would you choose?

I love my local credit union.  It is small and they helped me out when I was fresh out of bk.  They gave me a secured card when the big bank I was banking with would not help me at all.  I am a firm believer in credit unions.  I have a strong business relationship with the member service rep who was there the whole time.  I will always be a member.  I LOVE MY CREDIT UNION.

Thank you for the wealth of knowledge I have learned from these forums. I am logging off as of November 9, 2022. I wish everyone great success.
