I just am at the start of beginning to rebuild my credit. My first step, I pulled my online free credit reports only for Transunion and Equifax. For some reason Experian would not go through. On them there are reporting differences between two of my negative accounts. The last payment dates are different and on Equifax they are both listed as open and closed on Transunion. Also on Transunion the closed loan account I am listed as a cosigner on, closed date in 2014, shows a $0 balance, but has a balance on the other. I'm wondering most what to do about that one as I have been receiving settlement letters for this account. Do I dispute the report saying open with a balance? Even more confusing is that the last date information reported on the two reports is the same. Why would there be this much of a discrepancy? If they've reported a $0 balance, can they be still trying to collect on it?
Any discrepancies/inaccuracies can be corrected.
Reporting of a $0 balance could simply be inaccurate, and does not itself comprise factual proof that there is no debt. Whethr they can collect of course depends upon whether there is still a debt, and not upon how it is currently reported.
Either file a dispute or make an informal call, detailing the inaccuracies.
