Best Way to Deal with Charge Offs

I have made some very decent strides in cleaning up my credit over the last two years. I’ve just received my first two prime cards with NFCU and Discover. I want to eventually get rid of my sub-primes, but not quite yet.

I have one store card that went 120 days late but is caught up now. I will try a goodwill letter once I’ve made a few more payments- this is the reason I did not PIF.

My student loans are showing lates from 04/2017 through 06/2017 but I am disputing this with Navinet. I was in deferment during this time, so this should be corrected.

The only thing left for me to deal with is charge offs. All the accounts below have been CO’d but if they are with collection agencies, those agencies are not showing up on reports. I am mostly sure of the info listed below, but the information on different CRs is not the same- for example DOFD, balance (if any), etc.

  • First Premier Bank-$694 DOFD 10/2016
  • Celtic Bank- $0 DOFD 09/2016
  • American First Finance-$692 and $1295 D0FD 10/2017
  • NC Financial- $0 DOFD 01/2017 (original balance $2910)
  • Flurish- $959 DOFD 01/2017

I was first wondering if I should dispute these as the data on each CR is different. I would need to do them one at a time because I am within SOL for California (4 years) so I need to be prepared to pay them off should that poke a sleeping bear. After that, I intend to try to do a PFD.

The Flurish is still reporting every month as a CO with that balance, so I feel like I should deal with them first. I need to stop the ding I’m getting every month.

The others have stopped reporting monthly, so I planned to deal with American First Finance followed by NC Financial. I’d save FP and Celtic Bank for last because I understand from these boards they will not do PFD.

Any thoughts on this? I should be able to have these paid off within the next 6 months, but I want to do it in the right way. I realize I won’t get a huge boost in my scores, I just want to get these cleaned up.

Thanks for your insights!

Re: Best Way to Deal with Charge Offs

I would pay First Premeir and Celtic Bank in full and then inundate their mailboxes with GW letters to have the tradlines removed. Because the CAs are not showing, all you have to do is just pay the accounts in full and then start a GW campaign to have them removed. Smiley Happy

The CAs are not showing on my credit report, so there is nothing for them to delete. All of these are showing as CO'd with the OC on my reports but none of the CAs are showing.

I would pay the CAs off so that they don't have a reason to report in the future. You never know. Smiley Happy

SOL for open accounts in CA is 4 years. Max time a COed account can remain on your CR is 7.5 yrs from the accounts DoFD.

Then you would make a deal with the CAs to NOT report in lieu of payment.
