Re: Building credit

I'd start by allowing all existing accounts to age past 12 months and hold off on more new accounts. Go after some soft pull CLIs where possible. Do use existing cards periodically to avoid future closure due to inactivity.

It is ok and adviseable to have balances report on 2 or even 3 of your revolving CCs. Reports listing balances shows use and activity is viewed positively. Just pay statement balance(s) before due date. I'd suggest keeping reported balance under 29% of a cards CL for maintaining higher Fico score. However, that is not critical for building credit and seeking CLIs. Do stay under 49% reported utilization even on small limit cards and always pay in full.

A future strategy for best rewards cards with high CL potential and greater SLs is best solicited in the credit card forum. A lot will depend on your spend style.

From a Fico score perspective an open installment always helps as a score booster. However, no benefit in optimizing aggregate installment loan utilization to build credit. Just avoid lates. Paying off loans early has no value toward credit history but can save some $ in interest payments.
