Collection accounts with new (recent) open dates???

Hi everyone,

I am trying to fix my credit. I have two charged-off accounts that were originally opened in 2004. I noticed the debts have been bought by CAs and that they now have recent open dates, 2011 and 2009. Is this possible??

Also, one of the OC (Capital One Bank) is still listed on my credit report as a closed account that has been "Transferred to another lender or claim purchased", and the TL has been "KD" up until April 2009 ("OK"), the date the collections account was opened. Why is that?

I was considering doing a PFD for both accounts but now I don't know what to do (especially with the Capital One acc). Any help in understanding what is going on and how I should proceed would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Collection accounts with new (recent) open dates???

Welcome to the forums!

I'd suggest reading the following:

Common Abbreviations

Credit Scoring 101 - great for knowing what is in your credit score and to see how your score is impacted.

What Steps Do I Take - great for learning the repair process.

and Example letters - PFDs, GWs, DVs, etc.

Open dates don't mean anything per repair, other than that is the date the CA acquired the account.

For CapOne, looks like they sold it to a CA in April 2009. When they sell it, they balance must go to $0 and they can no longer report any lates.

The only thing you can do with CapOne is to send a GW letter asking them to delete any CO references and/or lates. Now CapOne is unusual in that they'll keep in communication with the purchasing CA so they may know whether or not it was paid. DW was in the same situation with her CapOne CO. It went to paid and CAs collected on it. From time to time, even though CapOne no longer owned the debt, CapOne would send her letters reminding her of the unpaid debt and would give her the collecting CA's contact info. When asked if they own it so as to do a PFD, they would say they no longer own it or can make decisions on the account.

For the CA, send a DV. If they verify and you agree, then send a PFD. If they agree in writing, then pay it and they'll delete.

For the second CA, you can do the same. Always keep an eye on SOL though. Make sure you have the $$$ set aside to PIF if you had to if you are inside SOL, lest you get sued. For the CapOne debt, you are already likely outside SOL. CapOne loves to sue and will often sell the debt once SOL expires.
