Collection posting to report then CA sells acct?

This is weird. My dad told me that on his report a collection showed up on the 5th of this month. One week later another CA call about that debt and he pays the CA.

So my question is can he remove the collection since the CA that posted it to his report no longer has a stake in the collection process? Also how will the old CA know that he paid? Am I missing something?

Re: Collection posting to report then CA sells acct?

Neither is required to delete.

Collections reported by a debt collector 1 will report as open until their collection authority is terminated, which occurs either when they terminate their agreement with the party who assiged them collection authority, they sell the debt, or the debt is paid.  Upon any of those occurences, the debt collector must update their reporting to show closed, and $0 now under collection.

If a second debt collector reports, they then have an open collection and a reported amount under their collection.

If he paid debt collector 2, then debt collector 1 should already have closed their collection and updated to $0.  They dont know or care about what happens with subsequent payment of the debt.

When collection authority has been terminated, many debt collectors will voluntarily delete their reporting, if for no other reason than to clear their books and prevent any future FCRA disputes related to that reporting.  However, the are not required to do so.

So I understand that CA #2 who was paid can post to his report, but CA #1 is still on his report as owing $114. So does he dispute that?

Thanks
