Always fight as CAs have NO MERCY, in fact that dance around when they get people to cave in to their scare tactics... there are some more aggressive tactics that you can discover on other boards.
However, Verizon is a difficult beast. Track down the President for your region's Verizon and harass him via email and snail mail (CMRRR) and faxes looking for some relief. Site the egregious business practices that all companies have done over the last few years, mention that Verizon escaped scottfree from congressional prosecution for spying on Americans, anything to shame the president into take a second look...
Who is reporting? The CA, the OC, or both?
The CRTP begins from DOFD. The date you went delinquent and never caught up prior to charge off/collection.
Do a search on the forums for llecs+verizon.....he had a long battle with them. I believe he eventually had luck with them.

Actually mine was Verizon Wireless. After dozens and dozens of PFDs, I had success via planetfeedback.com with a PFD through there.
Now DW also had a Verizon (landline) issue. We sent about 12-15 PFDs to them with no luck and then I sent one to Verizon's President or CEO. Within a week, it disappeared off her CRs. So, I mailed a check for PIF not really questioning the order of events (duh, PFD letter, acceptance, pmt, delete vs. PFD letter, delete, payment). They never cashed it but sold the acct to AFNI and forwarded the check. Three months after I wrote the check, AFNI cashed it and sent a letter saying the account was settled. Luckily, AFNI never reported for DW.
File a complaint with your state's Public Utilities Commission.
In my case I filed a complaint against Cingular in 2003 or so (now AT&T Wireless) for charging me an early termination fee when only 1 day was left on my contract. I called their CSRs to complain and got tossed around rudely. They acted as if I was a parasite and would laugh at me since I was dumb enough to expect them to be "nice", when they were simply acting within their contractual obligations, and I was the one who "broke the contract" by cancelling one day early!
After I filed a detaile online complaint (names of CSR with dates & times of calls) with the California Public Utilities Commission against Cingular, about 30 days later I got a call from someone at the "Office of the President at Cingular". They called to apologize for their CSRs, claiming one of them had been fired for laughing at me and treating me rudely (they keep recordings of the calls). She also let me know that they were sending me a check for a refund of the $175.
I was very happy with the outcome & suggest you file a detailed complaint with your state's PUC as well if you want to be taken seriously.
