Dispute a collection

I have a collection that is very old.. So old I question that it should still be on my report..

On annual credit report the dofd isn't quite 7 years yet but I think that date may even be quite a bit later than I actually abandoned this utility bill..

Can I dispute it and just say "This is too old to be on my report" and see if they buy it?

Is their any harm if that is a false statement?

I have not paid it and it reports a missed payment every month and I think my score would explode if it was gone..

I would like it to be gone any my score up but I am unwilling to spend any money on it because I don't NEED the score right now and won't really NEED my score until after the dofd is 7 years anyway..

I think the dofd reported is 12-14 months away so it should drop off at 6years 6 months so another 6-8 months it will fall off? Or 12-14 months max?

IDK..

Utility bill from a bad split up and losing the place an entire different life ago it seems..

I have a 675 fico 8 right now..

I want mid 700s for real estate investment purposes someday..

Re: Dispute a collection

You could be eligible for Early Exclusion, but I am not sure. When is the debt due to fall off officially?

Re: Dispute a collection

No one could advocate that you dispute a valid debt unless there is an error in its reporting as it would violate this boards credit repair guidelines. I would confirm the DoFD being reported to the CRAs by requesting paper copies be mailed to you. This way you can make sure that it is correct from your records and if not you could dispute it but if its not updating monthly I would just leave it be as a Fico score drop would be the result when the status date comes current.

Max reporting time is 7.5 yrs from the account DoFD.
