Hello everyone
I was speaking with a family member about my bad debt and he told me that I could settle the debts then dispute them after and because they have already been paid, the creditors or CA won't fight the dispute resulting in the debt falling off. Has anyone else done something similar or have heard of this method ? He was able to raise his credit from high 400s to mid 700s.
You can ask for a pay for delete if they are willing . If you settle the debt, it does not mean they won't verify if you dispute after settling .
You have been told wrong as pay them then disputing them doesn't mean they will come off. You can try to write each of the people that you wronged originally and ask if they will remove collections/charge offs and hope that they might. 7 years to typically come off . Disputing might give you a temporary 30 day score boost, but majoirty of them will reappear back on your credit until age off or removed by creditor or CA.
Could you give us some names of who your talking about?
Rule no 1 for rebuilding is to order paper coppies from CRAs. You then triage them and find errors. You dispute those errors off of paper reports. Snail mail disputes are most effective than electronic disputes.
As for what you were told, paying them and disputing will not get them off. However, there are certain CAs who will delete once paid. You may list them here so we can help you identify and dispute.
Rule of thumb: Always negotiate a Pay for Delete before you pay them and must be in writing.

Almost all CA's wont send letter of intent for PFD. They have contracts with the CRA's to report accurately. They dont want folks using letters against them. Not all CA's are honest. Say one thing do another. Many do PFD on their own for good business measure to get paid. They dont even send letters.
