Fake/phishing collection agency advice - RJM acquisitions LLC

My husband recently received a letter from RJM acquisitions LLC. They claim to be a collection agency trying to collect on an overdrawn Wells Fargo bank account. He has a Wells Fargo account so we went in to our local branch to find out more.

The lovely staff at Wells Fargo checked their databases then called their billing dept and then the "recovery" dept. They said the Wells Fargo account number was incorrect, as far as Wells Fargo was concerned he didn't owe them and the recovery team said they'd never heard of RJM Acquisitions.

We recently got an Experian credit report for him and found a RJM Acquisitions soft inquiry on there.

What should be our next step? We have been rebuilding his credit and I really want to avoid an incorrect collections account to start appearing on his report!

Thanks

I would file a complaint with the US AG & Your States AG. Scams by CAs are rampant today. Good luck Smiley Happy

Re: Fake/phishing collection agency advice - RJM acquisitions LLC

Thanks again for your help gdale6.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is an AG?

Should I contact the Collections agency at all, to ask them to cease and desist? Or just go straight ahead and report them?

Thanks

AG = Attorney General

I would go directly to them and not even discuss with this company personally. Although you could do a DV on them as well.

Re: Fake/phishing collection agency advice - RJM acquisitions LLC

Thanks Cflowers0115.

I should have given more info, but this collection is not currently reported on his CRs as a tradeline. Can you do a DV in this situations?

Thanks for the clarification.

Sure you could DV this if you wanted to but the collection has proven to be fraudulent and I would just inform the authorities about it. Your choice though.

If possible, you'd want to do this with proof.  See if WF will give you a letter on their letterhead stating you have no present or past unpaid debt with them.  This will give you a little more mojo when dealing with the situation.  Then send that in with your complaints, or if doing by online form, state that documentation is available upon request.

This account could me a similar name that shows up on the CR. RJM actually treated me very well and will do a PFD if it comes down to it.
