GW Letters

If I settle collections accounts, is a GW letter still good?

Re: GW Letters

If it is with a CA, I would send a GW letter if they are already paid.

If with the OC, then it would depend on how old the account is. Having it removed could hurt you more than help you.

Re: GW Letters

I have a collections on my report that I paid off to the OC. The CA doesn't seem to want to remove it, just noted as Paid. Should I try a GW letter ? Original debt was from 2002. Thanks for any help.

Re: GW Letters

What kind of debt was this?  If it happens to be medical, you wouldn't send GW, but follow the HIPAA process, you can access this information by clicking on the link below.

You paid the OC and not the CA?

If the original debt was from 2002, it should be removed 2009.

GW is what you send for removal of the account. If the CA is reporting, you send the CA the GW. They can only remove their entry, not the OC's entry.

Re: GW Letters

The Original debt was to Time Warner back in 2002. I recently (5/2008) paid off debt to Time Warner even though it was Credit Protection Asso. that is reporting the collection. In 6/2008 CPA reported debt paid but didn't remove it. I'd like to have this remove before trying for a mortgage.

Re: GW Letters

FYI, I had no luck with CPA, either with DV'ing them or after paying the debt GW'ing them. This was awhile back and I went about things the wrong way, but ultimately it worked out by going back to the OC (Time Warner, now Comcast in my case). I convinced them to remove (they still technically owned the debt so CPA had to listen to them). It also was from 2002 and would have fallen off in early spring anyway, so I used that point (along with paid, and various violations by CPA) to convince them of my worthiness to remove. The first and only letter I ever got from CPA was one saying they'd delete (and it has been deleted). They are one of 2 CA's I had/have that boggle the mind: they never tried to actually collect but nevertheless saw fit to report and continue reporting.
