Gift card if selected: Looking for people to share their credit story

myFICO is looking for someone to share their credit journey for April’s Financial Literacy Month.  Do you have an inspiring credit journey that you think could help others? We are looking specifically for “credit builders” – in other words, people who have built their credit over time (perhaps to qualify for a mortgage or to reach some other financial goal).  Bonus points if you’re willing to share your first name and a photo with your story.

Does this sound like you? Please submit a brief overview of your credit journey and you may be selected to be featured in the myFICO blog!

If you get chosen, you can get a $50 Amazon gift card.

Re: Looking for people to share their credit story

If this were the 1980s,  I could probably qualify.

I came back from defaulting on a couple of loans, going to collections, getting my check garnished in the mid 1980s---to being able to buy a co-op (with my mother's downpayment help) in 1990.

Re: Gift card if selected: Looking for people to share their credit story

Sometimes, war is peace and 2+2=5 when people are more excited about "moderating" than about the info that the board exists to share. I digress.

My credit rebuild story is all in my signature. This time last year, I was a few days away from opening my first account in many years. I didn't even have FICO scores on Experian and TransUnion for a while but the scores I could see were in the low 500s. On April 8 of last year, with a couple of small collections and nothing else on my credit reports since 2011, I opened a $200 Citi secured card. Later in April, I opened another small secured card. In May, I opened a Discover secured card and an unsecured Amazon Store Card. In June, I got a car loan and a $5,000 Visa Signature card from my credit union. In July, I got an Amex Gold card. In August, I got two Amex cobrand cards. In September, I got a PayPal MasterCard. That fall, I gardened and worked on credit limits. In December, I got an Apple Card. In January, I got an Amex Platinum. In February, I gardened. In March, I got an Amex Delta Platinum card with a $20,000 limit. Also in March, I got an Amex Blue Cash Everyday card with a $10,000 limit. Also in March, I got a Citi AAdvantage Platinum card with an $11,000 limit. Today (April), I got a Citi Costco card with a $9,500 limit. My FICO 8 scores are in the mid-700s, and the results from my recent applications are in line with the scores.

MyFICO has been vital for this, both the subscription service's scores and info, and the forum itself. Although, as happens everywhere, there is a tendency for people to get dogmatic in unhelpful ways, so it's best for anyone starting this journey to hear multiple opinions (to the extent this board allows it) and to know real-world results that people have had using different methods.

FICO Resilience Index: 64. Cards: 5/24, 2/12, 2/6. Accounts including loans: 8/24, 4/12, 3/6. Card CLs total $213,900, or $240,400 including the AU card. Cards (oldest to newest)

Re: Gift card if selected: Looking for people to share their credit story

I like a lot of folks here didnt recieve much training from my family on financial responsibility. So as an adult I made a lot of bad choices. Mostly just taking out a lot more student loans than I needed and defaulting on them as well as letting bills go to collections. Later on I did get a few credit cards that I eventually let go to collections as well due to health issues.

I started my journey here about 4 years ago when my student loans defaulted and I saw I was setting myself up for failure. Here I was a man in his mid 30s who had no understanding of how much credit effected your life. After getting my student loans rehabbed I started following this board more and started looking into rebuilding my credit. I got my first credit card. A secure CapOne. After a few months I was offered a Quicksilver card and eventually got a CL increase on it. I wasnt able to take care of my collections at the time but I was tackling my student loans and taking care of my credit cards and car payment. I was on the right track.

Like any good story goes though you need some adversity and we had a lot of it. Health Issues, vehicle issues, and some more immaturity on my end caused me to regress until I came back to this page at the beginning of the year. We were fortunate enough to have a small amount of money come to us that we werent expecting and we decided we needed to tackle our debt for good this year. So we started chipping away at our bills, our collections, and organize our spending.

Now I have no collections on my credit report (well I wont once these two I paid to day are removed), one charge off that was settled, and 3 credit cards in good standing. My credit score went from the 480s to the low 600s and we are now moving onto my wives credit and hope to have it done by the end of next month.

Re: Gift card if selected: Looking for people to share their credit story

@Cindy_FICO  Hey Cindy,

If it weren't for MyFico and doing a simple search in Oct. 2018 about credit cards I'd still be creditless.  We had one thing, a loc from our local bank and nothing else.  I didn't think we could get a credit card until all the bad stuff was completely gone and I didn't even know when that would be. I figured many, many more years tbh.

I typed in "credit cards for bad credit people" (lol) and up pops a bunch of MyFico stuff. Never heard of y'all before.  I read probably 20 threads, searched for Discover and app'd......got a secured card for $200.  Since that afternoon in October, we have been able to pick up another $320k in credit (Business and Personal) and all of it is because of MyFico forum and members, no where else on the internet did I rely upon because the ppl advising here sounded so smart and sincere and not pushing a lot of weird stuff and peddling products.

While rebuilding I learned through the MyFico Business Forum about Business Credit.  It was all Greek to me as we've always personally guaranteed 90 day notes and had accts. with local business for 30+ years.  We needed strong personal scores to start the build process for our company which were, after 8 months of rebuild, getting to an acceptable range. Started apping for biz cards in Summer of 2019.  It's been an exciting journey, a little too fun sometimes.Smiley Very Happy

So after 1.5 yrs. we will be finished with the personal rebuild hopefully soon as all that's left is a 30 day late with our bank that I'm in the process of GW in hopes of completing our journey in the very near future.

Thank you to all who guided and directed me because it's truely been a life changing event in a surprisingly short amt. of time.  I tell ppl this a lot......."Go to MyFico".

ETA: GOAL

The purpose for the personal rebuild and business build will be an important personal loan through our bank in April 2021.  Our LO said to have our scores higher than what they were, and they are by 120+ pts., and we will qualify for the best rate and will also apply for a Business loc too.

Re: Gift card if selected: Looking for people to share their credit story

I'm just starting my rebuild but happy to update/participate thought the journey if there's any interest. So far it looks like my journey will be most, if not all, based on information that's provided on myfico.com

I've already given a fairley detailed starting point of where I'm at in the forums and do not mind sharing pics, names or any other info.
