LVNV Resurgent Capital Collection

I was contacted by Resurgent Capital concerning a Windstream account from 2016 for $346.  Evidently, they bought this collection from LVNV Funding.  They are stating that I opened a Windstream phone account.  Im assuming that it was opened by a family member in my name but I am not sure. The service address is not listed on my credit report as also is the address that they are sending correspondence to.  My credit scores are an average of 780 across all three reports. Ive never opened any account with them so they cannot have my signature on any contract or my identification on file for that account.  My concern is that even though this account isnt mine, I cannot remove it later.  Should I just pay the account now?  And if I do pay the account now, can they put it on my credit report after it is paid?  The account is not on my report at this time.  Can they update it, add it, then mark it paid?  Or after it is paid, can they not do that?  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Re: LVNV Resurgent Capital Collection

I believe Resergent and LVNV are both part of the Sherman Group,  which owns Credit One.  So the account has just been shifted to a new division.  I don't know what you should do, except to offer you the advise that you are dealing with some really bad people. Be very, very careful.

Re: LVNV Resurgent Capital Collection

Tough one. Best bet and this is from Resurgent:

"If an account is paid in full or settled in full and the payment resolving the account is processed before we begin credit reporting, we will not report the account to the credit reporting agencies."

With your scores. I'd protect them and pay it before it does report. Its not that much. Then start looking into who gave you the shaft and deal with them appropriately.
