I got a notification from my credit reports that there was a collection agency added. I looked it up and it was Jefferson. I Called them to see what the debt was from-- 60 dollars from a Nordstrom debit card? I'm still uncertain I can be collected for this.
Nonetheless I contacted Nordstrom directly to verify and they had the same information. I then spoke with Jefferson again after readin about the collection agencies online. I had NEVER been contacted by them, not once. I would have paid the 60 dollars obviously, but they just went straight to the credit bureau... I was so angry. After speaking with three different representatives and asking for a pay and delete-- they told me that they don't do these sorts of things. The only thing they would do is contact the bureau to tell them I paid, but they wouldnt help to get the negative information off my credit report.
I was livid. I ended up filing reports with the BBB, the CFPB, Experian, and TransUnion. I'm waiting to see what happens. I was never notified and didn't have the chance to pay the debt if I wanted to...
There is no requirement that a debt collector provide any notice to the consumer prior to reporting a collection.
The process is to continue to offer a PFD prior to paying, or to pay and then continue pursuit of a good-will deletion.
