Hey guys. I just recently paid off a collections account that originally started off with Kay Jewelers and was bought out by some collections agency. I had attempted to call Kay and explain that the balance was paid in full and asked if that could be reported to the credit bureau....and they told me that there is nothing that they can do on their end due to the fact the account was closed/written off and sold to a collections agency.
I obviously don't expect this to be removed completely from my report (which would be crazy nice) but what steps can I take in order to make the credit bureaus aware it had been paid? I do plan on purchasing a home in the near future so a collections-paid is better than a collections-delinquent...and I feel like overall that would help me in the near future with CLI's and what not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!
The collection agency you paid is the one who would be reporting the zero balance to the CRA's. If it was just paid off it may take a few weeks until the next reporting cycle to update the balance. They are obligated to update in a "timely" manner. Some are more "timely" than others.
Congrats on paying it off.
If you tell us the name of the collection agency you paid, someone here may have experience and be able to more precisely tell you when to expect the balance update and whether or not that collection agency deletes the tradeline with payment.
I appreciate the feedback.
The collections account was with DNF Associates. Being completely transparent, the only reason it got paid in full is because I got served by a local lawyer with a summons to go to court....so I guess you could say I paid it in full through the lawyer, not DNF (it's a real old account). Still, it has been over two months now and has not been reported as PAID, so I guess my play is to call DNF?
You are correct. If DNF Assoc is reporting on your credit report than they are the ones who need to update to zero.
