Portfolio Recovery/Capital One - Collection Removed - SUCCESS!!

Hi everyone,

So you've been such an amazing resource, and always helpful, I wanted to "give back" a little and share my latest success in battling my crappy credit history.

Basically, I am battling a couple of baddies. Some I have noone but myself to blame for but there was one in particular that I was ademant must be fraud. There was a lot of discrepancies on this account which was supposedly opened in 2015, but didn't go into collections until January 2019 which hit me as a total surprise. I talked about it here: https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Rebuilding-Your-Credit/National-Recovery-SUCCESS-Portfolio-Listing-...

Long story short, I first disputed with Portfolio. They told me to kick rocks and said pay up or we don't remove it. I tried making them a lowball offer, they said no. I then called Capital One directly, this was a little over a month ago. I explained the situation: the account is under an incorrect name (my middle name, not first name), the account was opened at a time I KNOW for a fact I didn't open any accounts (was going through personal trauma, last thing I was thinking of is credit cards). It was sent to my OLD address in a state where I hadn't even lived in several month. They said they'll look into it and that was that.

Friday I received a skinny, plain-looking letter from them. Well.. the message inside wasn't so plain!! They said they concluded the investigation, told me to check my other accounts, and that this account is indeed fraudulent. They also said they'll remove it from all 3 credit bereaus. I called Portfolio back to see if I need to do anything with them and they said they already "sent back the collection to the original creditor".

It's currently still showing up on my report, but I know it can take a few days.

Very happy with how this came out. The only thing I have left in collections is an old Sprint bill ($500) and a ConEdison collection of $300, both of which I hope I can pay soon and get rid of them.

Great progress. Are you trying PDF with those CA?

Congrats. Give it 30 days or so.The CRA's and Cap1 updates monthly at times. If they dont change it by then. You got the letter to dispute it as proof. Good Luck!

I am! I know they're both likely going to be tough. The CA for Sprint is Enhanced Recovery, and ConEd is Online Info Services. I already read all about the "back door" to Sprint, by paying them in full directly and then disputing... not sure yet how I'm going to approach the Online Info Services CA. I have not been able to find much about them :/

Cant find one success story online about Online Info Services. You could try and pay ConEd and have them recall the collectons. As far as PFD with Online CA. Looks like it wont happen. Lots of complaints on the BBB page about their tactics. Paying Sprint directly has had some success stories. Good Luck!

Thank you @FireMedic1 ! This is exactly the route I will have to take, it seems. Hope the OG creditors accept my payment still, and then recall the collections. Almost wishing Portfolio was handling one of those - at least I knew I can pay and they'd be gone. Sigh. Oh well. You live, you learn. I'll keep everyone posted!!

Re: Portfolio Recovery/Capital One - Collection Removed - SUCCESS!!

Oddly enough, I had a similar experience with Synchrony Wal-Mart a few months ago. I had submitted a dispute on the account through the credit bureaus. Amonth or so later, the account disappeared and I received a letter from Synchrony saying they investigated the account and found it to be fraudulent. They removed my responsbility for the debt and deleted it. What's odd is that my dispute never claimed ID theft, but I am not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
