Rebuild and Unsecured Credit Card Suggestions

I have a co-worker who is just starting a rebuild and she has no credit cards.  We haven't pulled all of her scores yet (it's on the To Do list), but her Experian via creditscorecard.com is a 539, TU via CreditWise (I know its a VS) is 546, when she got her car in July her TU FICO auto score was a 509.  She has about $10,000 in medical collections (medical issues and no insurance), but no late payments.  She has a personal loan through a CFA and a 3 month old car loan.  Very thin file.  I am trying to find her a card to help her get established with something for the time being, but am running out of ideas.  She doesn't want a secured card as she doesn't really have a  lot of extra money at the moment to put on the card.  We have tried prequalify sites for Credit One, Capital One, and Discover but did not get any good news.  I'm trying to avoid unneccesary hard pulls for her.  Any suggestions for other cards that may work for her?  We also discussed her being added as an AU on someone's card, but it doesn't sound like she really has anyone that would be of benefit for her.

Looking for any suggestions to help her along the way.  We have plans to pull her reports and see if there is anything that is incorrect and the check the DOFD on the collections.

Re: Rebuild and Unsecured Credit Card Suggestions

You've been here longer than me, so if any of this is a repeat for you, just disregard...

She may have to wait a few-6 months or so until she can save up at least a little bit to put on a secured card.

You don't want to put a lot on a secured card because you want one that graduates, so why tie up your cash? No more than $200, as long as the bank/CU doesn't make you put any more than that. But the less you put on there, the less your initial CL, so just keep that in mind

One positive she can look at (seriously!): If she's never bk'ed and never CO'd a card, she has some options available to her that aren't available to a lot of other rebuilders.

only lists major banks but I found the guide helpful. http://www.elitepersonalfinance.com/best-secured-credit-cards-that-convert-to-unsecured/

You may want to pick one card that you think she may have decent chance at and also steel yourself that she may fail at and know that she'll just live with the HP(s) for it. Research which bureaus get pulled for that app, and what other people on this forum were at when they got approved. Otherwise - if no prequal sites are biting - I think getting 1-2 secured cards reporting is really best bet, even if it does unfortunately take her a bit longer.

Best of luck to your coworker :-)

Re: Rebuild and Unsecured Credit Card Suggestions

My file isn't much better. It can be hard to put down for secured cards but maybe try the capital one secured was able to get 200 line for only 49 down and if I remember right they have a prequalify for it. Think they offer 49, 99, or 200 down for the cap1.

Re: Rebuild and Unsecured Credit Card Suggestions

BOA used to offer the 99/500 card, that's always a cheaper option if qualified.

Get her reports and start working on those PFD's, hopefully she can settle for less.

Best of luck!!
