Re: Rebuilding

Target, or Walmart is what I used when I was rebuilding. Look at store cards though, or a credit union even. That led to a basic unsecured Cap 1 there after.. You'll get there.

Re: Rebuilding

Look at building your positive history with lenders also. The old baddies falling off with time will help too, no doubt.

Re: Rebuilding

Walmart's store card is an excellent way to rebuild.  If you are approved, sign up for online statements and you'll get a free TU FICO score every month to help keep track of your progress.  It's a real FICO too, not a FAKO.  In addition, I would start looking into writing goodwill letters to creditors for past missed payments.  I was able to get GW adjustments for a 90 day late and a 30 day late and that cut years off my rebuilding time.

Starting Score: TU: 566
Current Score: TU: 741 (Discover FICO); EQ: 755 (MyFico) EX: 774 (FAKO)
Goal Score: 800

Re: Rebuilding

you can try out the gemb cards. i just got a jcrew and buckle store cards. you shold use the shopping cart trick. you dont have to buy anything but purchase something then go to the checkout. you will not have to enter any payment info so if you dont get a popup before then it didnt work. just start entering your info (name address etc..) and once youve filled out enough info but before any cc info is entered you will get either a popup or an add on the page that asks you to apply for a store card. you hit accept and fill out a lil info and the LAST 4 OF YOUR SS. this is important bc if it asks for all 9 it means it will do a HP which will bring your score down. they are very easy to get and you can google shopping card trick for more info.

ps. after youve been approved just go to the shopping cart and delete the purchase, you dont have to buy anything and they will send you a card. i will probably only use each of them once for a small purchase this year to keep them open.

Re: Rebuilding

Instead of adding new cc's ( you already have some) I'd work on the baddies and keep your util low. New cc's -if approved - will not erase the derogs. It's best to repair and rebuild.

For more advice on getting the CO/CA handled, I'm going to suggest moving this to Rebuilding Forum.

Re: Rebuilding

ps as you can see in my sig my scores were the same as yours in december. the 3 things that affected it most were the initial boost from getting my first revolving account with cap1. then one month it was high util and dropped about 50 pts paid it back down to <10% and the points came right back. then a month ago i got about a 30 pt boost from either my 3 hard pulls passing the 6 month mark where they no longer ding your score (but remain on report for the full 2 years) or your score bumps up after 6 months of revolving accounts reporting on your report. not sure which bumped it.

ps. the collections is a b**ch. i actually started rebuilding 3-4 years ago in a sense bc i paid about 10 of my 12-15 collections i had either in full or settled. a few were due to drop off so i left them, but i had cash to burn then i didnt really get into step 2 until last december when i got the cap1 card. so i don't know if your results with the cards will be exactly like mine.

Welcome! My scores were very similar to yours when I started rebuilding in 2010 and 2011.

It took patience, time and dedication to get my scores to where they are now. The BIGGEST part of it was allowing derogatory info to naturally fall off.

I started with a WF $600 and FP $700, used them both responsibly for a year, kept UTL very low, and then time took its course.

Time will be good to you too.
