Hey there,
You've come to the right place, I've found this community incredibly helpful and am happy to see if I can pay it forward a bit. It's tough to lay all the baddies out like that, so good job on facing it.
One key question: are any of the charge-offs or closed/collections accounts you mentioned paid? With paid CO's and collections the best thing you can do is "goodwill" them, where you write or call to ask if they would ask the bureau to delete the item from your report. It will probably take several requests over several months to see any success with this approach, but it's absolutely possible (I just got a couple deletions myself that way). For unpaid CO's and collections, the best approach is what's called "pay for delete" or "PFD." This is where you call or write and ask if they will delete after you pay the full amount owed. They may not agree, but if they do, it's a big win for you. One thing to be careful about, since several of yours are recent, is that this can be dangerous if you are still inside the Statute of Limitations (SOL) in your state. That's because if they know you have the money to pay, and they're still legally allowed to sue you, they may just respond to your PFD request by telling you to pay or they'll sue. It's rare, but it does happen, and it's worth carefully considering - it means you should never send a PFD request unless you are prepared to pay in full immediately if required to.
Other than that, the main advice I'd have at this point is to pay down the balances on the cards you do have, and see if you can keep opening a new one every 6 months or so. The more good accounts you have the better at this point, and the lower your utilization the faster your score will recover.
Good luck, and I'm sure other wiser minds than me will be able to help you on your journey if you stick around.
Got it - in that case I would start by using the "goodwill" approach for all the paid ones (you'll see a lot of threads on this board using the term "GW" - you should read some of those, they often have examples of the language they used in their letter or call)
For the Amex, you might consider calling them right before making your last payment, and ask if they would consider deleting your tradeline after the last payment clears. They may just say no, but if that happens then just wait until after you've sent in the last payment, and asking for a GW deletion. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but the worst they can say is "no," and all it takes is one "yes" to make things a lot better for you. It took me about 3 months and at least a dozen or so calls & emails to 6 different people to get my first GW deletion, but it helped my score a lot so it was totally worth it.
thank you tomorrow im gonna start on my goodwill letters. and im gonna call amex and see if I pif the last of the balance early if they could reopen and delete the negative tradeline.
Updates in RED Holding breath and praying!!!
I was able to Open a NFCU memberhip last night...waiting for some baddies to fall off so I can get a credit card through them.
Please let me know what goes on with MRS BPO because I have a debt with at&t as well I would like to get a PFD with. They've offered me settlements, but I'd gladly pay the full amount for a deletion.
