Transunion charged me $26 and I don't even know why.

I was making an account on transunion's website and it was asking me for all of my info. When it came to a part wanting my credit card info I looked through the details and saw nothing about being signed up for a credit monitoring system. I then look at my bank account later and I see the charge from them. I get the vantage score from my credit union, and I don't need a credit report right now. I was just trying to make an account to look into their services. Has anyone else had this happen to them? This is ridiculous. I am a nursing student and don't make much money in the first place. $26 is gas for me to get to and from clinic at the hospital. I am so sick of these corporations screwing me over. Shady at best.

Does anyone have advice? I knew I should have used my credit card info and not my debit card. If I don't get a refund tomorrow I will be contacting consumer affairs.

Re: Transunion charged me $26 and I don't even know why.

Im assuming you called and cancelled the service already which is why you're expecting a refund tomorrow?

Transunion has several different products offered on their website, only one of which is free.  I admit the way they set up the product info can be confusing so you have to read very carefully.   But, if I recall correctly, a sign up isn't required to review products.

One hint that they (or any company)  may charge you is when they ask for payment info like a credit or checking account number.   When you see such a request, best to take the time to read through the terms and conditions of the service before proceeding to find out why your financial info is required (sometimes it's a form of id verification or it could be for potential future billing if you're agreeing to a free trial). And if you can't figure it out from the T&C, then contact the company and ask - never just hand them your payment info without understanding why.

Good luck!

Re: Transunion charged me $26 and I don't even know why.

I was reading closely. They had NOTHING about any sort of financial transaction anywhere that I could see. I even clicked back and went back through to see if there was anything. Unless they had some sort of link to their terms on another page I didn't see anything at all. I did call but the hours are limited due to covid they said. Which is odd in itself since I would think this job could be done completely from home. I will call first thing in the morning. There seems to be countless stories about this exact same thing happening to people. Extremely shady.

Sounds like the only way to deal with this is if they don't give a refund then to contact consumer financial protection .

You're cancelling very soon after the purchase, never having an opportunity to use whatever service they charged you for, so you'll probably receive your refund without hassle.  I believe there's also a customer service message option on their site somewhere -  so you can send a note through that also if you have trouble reaching them by phone.

Re: Transunion charged me $26 and I don't even know why.

I think what got me was that I was just trying to get info on getting my actual fico score. I clicked a link that made it seem like I was just going to be making an account. It says sign up, etc, etc. I just went back and looked and it says in tiny white print in a separate box on the right side (I had to scroll my window to even see it) that I was signing up for some BS. Nowhere else did it say that I was signing up in the next 3 or 4 pages. There wasn't a single thing saying my total would be this or that. There was nothing that said anything about money, or a subscription on the final page, etc. I know some people are thinking thats my fault, and maybe it is, but this was completely made to trick people into getting a subscription without noticing it. They have been sued in the past over this, and they are doing it again. The fact there is precident from them doing this exact same thing to people made my mind up. I would link to the countless identical stories of this but I'm not sure if that is allowed.

Well -- you can still file a complaint with BBB even after you are refunded all of your money - if for any reason to have a record of what you believe to be misleading business practices -- and maybe your story will help someone else in the future.

Also -- the transunion website doesn't offer FICO scores.  They offer scores of the Vantage 3 model which are not particularly useful as the overwhelming majority of lenders use FICO to make credit decisions; very few, if any, use Vantage.

If you want a legit source for your FICO scores, go to Experian.com.  They offer a $1 / 7-day trial which will provide your FICO 8 scores for all 3 credit bureaus.  They will request your payment info to sign up for the trial but will not charge you the monthly subscription fee unless you fail to cancel the service before the trial ends.  You will literally only pay $1 as long as you cancel in time.    Members of this forum use the service all the time and no billing issues have been reported.  You can even sign up for the trial again later if you want an update on your scores.

Experian also offers a free plan (no payment info required to sign up) that will provide your Experian FICO 8 score with a score update every 30 days.

Re: Transunion charged me $26 and I don't even know why.

Thank you for the help. I just had my bankruptcy discharged early from TU so I went from very happy to very dissapointed. I mean I get its just $26, but that is a lot for me right now. School nickels and dimes me already. I saw my vantage score went up 54 points, but I have no clue what my scores are with fico. I honestly thought I was just signing up for a TU name and account, and I feel like I was led to believe that. I just want my money back. Again, Thank you.

Re: Transunion charged me $26 and I don't even know why.

Unfortunetly, they probably had some small link somewhere to read everything with a box you had to check understanding that. They have lawyers to write those up to lock you in and if you dispute, they say did you sign up? Did you check this box stating your read and understood the terms and clicked ok? Thats how they get you. Shady, yes. Illegal, maybe but probably not. As for the refund, it won't be the next day. Figure 2 weeks or so. Alot of places are quick to pull that money but very slow on giving it back.

Re: Transunion charged me $26 and I don't even know why.

I have to check. Couple of days ago I put a dispute and at that time it did not my credit card payment information but I suspect it might have signed me up in a paid service. I don't want to pay them. Especially when I am disputing the erroneous information they reported.

Update: I called TU to verify there is paid or fee assesed services on my account. They confirmed, I have a free account that I can use for disputing information and I do not have any fees associated with my account. I told CSR, I did not want to any surprises. Glad it is a relief.

Yes; sounds like the writing isn't clear...
