Tricky situation - age or utilization?

Hi All: Looking for advice on whether or not to "close" an account. I'm an authorized user on my ex-husband's credit card. I've asked him to remove me, but he hasn't yet (recently divorced). Before I push the issue, I wonder if you nice folks can help me with some strategic thinking. He pays the bill every month on time, but his credit card is at about 95% utilization. For example, his balance just increased by $200 and it caused my score to drop 7 points. His one credit card is almost equal to the balance on my three cards put together. So, my utilization is showing at 48% even though my cards are paid off. HOWEVER, his account is the oldest on my credit report by far. I consolidated my student loans last year, so now they are technically only 1 year old. My credit cards range from 5 - 8 years old. His card is 18 years old. I'm looking to move in 2 months so don't want to tank my credit right now. Do you think that removing his card will cause a big drop b/c of the age of my accounts? My scores are around 650 right now so I'm really not able to absorb a huge drop while I'm applying for apartments. Would you recommend keeping the card on there until I confirm an apartment or remove it immediately because of the utilization issue? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Util does more of a sting than age. If he wont remove you. Not knowing which lender your talking about. You can call and explain the situation and ask to be removed.

Thanks for the quick response. It's with Bank of America. I was going to call and see what I can do.

Going through a divorce can cause issues financially.  His utilization is not helping you and if he stops paying that card because he cant or for some other reason, it will do nothing but hurt you.  You have seperate lives now, time to have seperate finances too.  Push with the issuer to have yourself removed by explaining the situation.
