Two collections for same debt?

Hello everyone, I am hoping you can help me.  A couple of months ago I noticed a collections account that appeared on my credit report for $154.  Last week I noticed another collections account for $154, but listed by a different collections agency.  What should I do?  I sent letters to both asking what this debt was and letting them know I didn't know anything about it- just heard back from the 2nd company today.  They sent a letter with a copy of the utility company invoice I was delinquent on.  I think I was delinquent because we had just moved and it fell through the cracks.  I have no intention of paying this debt off twice.  Help!

Re: Two collections for same debt?

The CRAs dont want plural collections simultaneously reporting on the same debt, so have a policy instructing debt collector A to delete any reporting they may have made if they assign or sell to a new debt collector B and the debt remans unpaid.

Simply file a dispute with the CRA of the reporing of debt collector A on the basis that they no longer have active collection authority.

That will result in deletion of the collection reported by A.
