letters to credit bureau or creditor?

I have a question:

About a couple of years ago I settled my Discover card for $538. It was a charge off. For some reason its being listed on my credit reports as a past due balance of $538, as if i never paid them. The charge off part is correct, but my reports are showing a balance of the $538.

Should i write a dispute letter to all 3 credit bureaus to investigate this or should I write to Discover and ask them to update my credit reports? The balance should say "0" not $538.

I would prefer they just delete the whole thing cause it bringing own my score.

I would write them a GW letter bringing the violation of law to their attention in not updating the balance and ask that it be handled by a total removal of the TL from your reports. Be nice about it dont make any untoward threats and you increase your chances of getting the GW.

Re: letters to credit bureau or creditor?

Call discover and talk to them about it. Provide proof of payment, etc. I'm going through this right now with comenity bank about a settled charge off, and they are stating they never received the final payment of the settlement agreement. I submitted bank statements proving it and the collection agency they sold it too, MCM, stated I have zero obligation to it. But, comenity bank is still reporting. I have been dealing with this for about 30 days already so be prepared for a drawn out process.. I don't recommend disputing with the CRAs yet because if there is a possible glitch in discovers system (like what I am going through), then it will come back as accurate.

I recommend speaking with discover first and finding the sole reason for the inaccurate reporting. And make sure you have all proof available in case you need to submit it. Request a letter from them stating the facts too. Once you have done all of that and you have received that documentation from Discover , wait 30 days and if nothing, then dispute with all CRAS and submit that letter as your proof.
