If they signed for the letter on 8/25 and then reported the debt before validating-- they are in violation of FDCPA.
I would send them a letter stating such and that they owe you a fine for doing so. They also owe you for double reporting, which is reporting information they know to be untrue. They know you don't owe the debt twice.
If you are willing to follow through and have a paper trail, I would send an ITS. Give them so long to meet your demands (remove the account and/or pay you $$) or you are suing.
