Honestly, it doesn't matter if it's metal or not, it's just kinda cool. I've heard mixed information, some say only some chase sapphire preferred cards are metal, some say all CSP cards are metal and only the CS cards are plastic. Does anyone know for sure? I like the card and I'm thinking about applying, I just don't want to be disappointed if I get a plastic one.
If you are approved for a CSP you will receive a metal card.
CSP = Metal. CS (no longer issued) are plastic.
Unless something changed in the last few months, all CSP should be metal. I know mine is. Frankly though, plastic cards are better imo. The coolness factor over a metal card dies out as you realize it takes more space in the wallet and even gets scratched. But then again, I tend to use embarassing cards over more prestigious ones if I can get a better reward.
Yes every CSP is metal, though I agre with the poster above that it is really not super practical, it's just cool looking/feeling.
The old no AF CS is plastic as others mentioned
Actually, technically not all CSP cards are metal...
You can actually request a plastic version and also one without a chip.
But yes, as other people have already stated, if you applied they would send you a metal one as standard.
EDIT: I believe the plastic one also features the numbers on the front of the card and not the back. This allows businesses such as car rental companies to trace the front of the card etc

I thought the chip wasn't optional to have. Why would one request such a card?

The chip is a relatively new feature that was only made available late 2013.
As for why someone would request to have it removed, I have no idea. It is pretty much a must have for anyone that travels outside of the US as most of Europe use chip and pin etc.
Requesting a no-chip version at this point would make little sense with the liability shift coming up in October. And that's if Chase would still at this time send you a no chip version which I find hard to believe. Maybe in 2014 they did but probably not now.

What is the liability shift?

It would of made little sense since the beginning lol. The only reason I can think of as to why people would request it would be so it looks more minimal, I don't know.
