Somewhere I read your "ranking" is based on a formula that includes your registration date, number of sign in's, along with the number of posts and new threads. Memory is a little dim on this but, something along this line. Also, you need to achieve a certain rank in the community before you are able to upload your own avatar. Truth, as has already been mentioned in this thread it does not take very long to move up the ranks
