Mine has the connection on the far right.  My only concern was that maybe Monitors had full progressed to HDMI and may not be compatible or have the adapters for my old video card.  Good to know this isn't the case!

Unfortunately, no Tiger Directs anywhere near CA, at least not that I know of.  I'll likely drop by Best Buy and pay more than I should.  Ordinarily, I'd order it online to avoid the sales tax, recycling fee, and whatever else extra they charge here.

Check out Microcenter if you live in Orange County. They have an extensive inventory of monitors and displays. A good setection of 22" to 24" LED displays in the $119.99 to $149.99 price range. I got a flier from them yesterday. It lists a 22" class IPS LED display with 1920 by 1080 resolution with VGA and HDMI connectivity on sale for $93.49.

I would strongly recommend HDMI for future proofing as VGA and DVI are legacy.

Wow!

Some great deals.  Too bad I'm in Northern, CA.  Yeah, this PC was built in 09, and only used to live stream some data in real time 24/7.  I suspect, in a year or two, the entire unit must be replaced.  Debating if I should still continue to build them, or just buy one off the shelf, since they're all so cheap these days.

I always talk myself out of building my own.  I start looking at components and I always go too far, making the cost skyrocket.

For instance, I know that using an Intel I-7 processor would give me good performance with multiple cores and hyperthreading.  Then I think, for a little more, I can get the latest generation.  Then for a little more, I can get the I-7 with the huge cache and I could overclock it.  I know that having 16 Gb of Ram would be really good.  But for a little more, I can get 32 WGb.  Wow, who has 32 Gb of Ram?  Wait, how much more for 64 Gb?  I know having a 7200 rpm hard drive is good.  But how about those Hybrid Drives with solid state memory and a 7200 rpm drive?  Wait, Solid State Drives, I could do that.  And so it goes.  I think that if I am spending 600, if I just went to 725 I would have a power house, etc etc.   Then 725 becomes 1100 and more.

I had to replace my old trusty Dell desktop from 2004 in June.  It was still running Win Xp and maxed out at 4 Gb of ram.  The power supply went out, maybe 50 bucks.  I also needed to go to Win 7, about 79.  So I would be putting about 130 into an old slow pc.

I bought a used pc that had been out on a business lease for 3 years.  I bought it from a reseller on ebay with a good reputation from other buyers of the same product.  It is a Dell Optiplex 790 with an I-7 second gen, 4 Gb of ram, and a 500 Gb 7200 rpm hard drive, integrated sound and vga video, with new Win 7 Pro for 280 incl shipping.

I bought a new video card with Hdmi and Dvi, and my speakers work as just stereo in the integrated video. I bought 8 Gb of ram, total of 12 Gb now.

I am absolutely delighted with it.  I had a 30 day guaranty from the ebay seller and the ebay purchase protection.  It worked well this time.

Dell has a habit of making things too proprietary so last time for this brand.  I have an Asus laptop and like it and will probably stick with that brand for desktops in the future.

I have also had good success with buying from the Dell Outlet Store online for lower prices, but again, I dont like their proprietary methods, so moving on.

Hey Guys,

One of my PC Monitors today went blank.

I need to buy a new one, today.  I'm not an electronics expert, and would rather not read up on it or seek out a specialized forum.  So, I thought I'd pose the question here, and some may point me in the right direction and save me some time researching.

What I need:

1.  At least 24' - 25'

2.  LCD vs. LED vs. IPS - Any of this make a difference or worth paying over the other?

3.  Any difference between HD TV and dedicated PC Monitor?  (I know, rudimentary question!)

4.  Budget - Ideally, under $150, or maybe I'll go up to $200!

Since I don't have the luxury of time, can't find the best price via net or cashback portals.  Just need to drop by Best Buy, and pay whatever price including taxes.

Thanks, and appreciate any help/insights offered!

LED refers to the backlight, these are ALL LCDs. I strongly, strongly recommend getting an IPS monitor - in fact, I'd say that's by FAR the most important thing to care about.

TV's tend to be lower quality, generally, and don't process the signal as well.

IMHO, DVI with the white connector is superior to the VGA with the blue connector, mainly because the VGA is analog and the dvi is digital.  Less problems with color distortions, etc.

Umm, colour is not the difference with DVI. DVI is superior, and that's not an opinion. But noise/ghosting/pixel alignment are the issues with analog... not colour.

P.S. to the person who said HDMI is replacing DVI, it isn't. HDMI is basically the same as DVI but with audio (there are other differences, but they're too detailed to get into here). HDMI is for televisions. DisplayPort is replacing DVI for computers, but it's a long road.

Re: Computer Monitor Suggestions?

Thanks, Guys!

The advice offered in this thread was very helpful.  I know basically nothing about screens, and was just too much to read up and research to replace a display.  Fortunately, with the rebate, I was able to replace the screen within range of what I had wanted spend.

Yeah, those speakers seem more like an ornamentation than for sound quality.  LOL
