We have had a few threads about the design of cards, I thought I would start one about overall user experience for online and app purchases. Discuss apps and online experiences that you really like, things you don't like or cards that you have specific complaints about.
I will share my favorite and my least favorite experience. My favorite is the Discover App, I use Chase, Capital One, AMEX and Citi apps as well but Discover in my opinion is the most simple and clean. It is easy to navigate and I like how clear it shows cash back earnings. There is just less need to click in sub menus in the app to get to stuff. Simple card, simple App.
My least favorite experience is my Dillard's AMEX. I have enough thoughts on this card for completely different thread, I hit elite status after a year of filling up my closet, I opted to not buy any clothes in 2020 but I convinced myself that I wanted to renew the elite status so I was putting random purchases on it, my annoyance is how old school their website is, one of my biggest complaints is it not letting you request CLI's online, not able to change awards preference online even though it has a button to press to do so. I also wish they had a spend tracker so you could see how close you were to renewing the elite status, which I am probably just going to give up on anyways because what I may pay in shipping may be less than what I could be earning putting those random purchases on other cards.
What is your favorite online or App experience, what is your least favorite and what would you change?

Capital One is my favorite major bank app, NFCU is my favorite CU app, and I hate (HATE) the Target REDcard website...
Cap One has a great app. I agree about Discover as well, but Capital One's has always held the top spot for me. (Even though I don't have any CapOne cards at the moment lol) Citi is another good one.
The BofA app isn't so good if you ask me. It's a little complicated when it comes to making payments.
My biggest pet peeve is when an app does not give you near-exact options that you get on their main website on a Desktop computer. The main killer tends to be Secure Messages or recent purchases on other cards.
The Good: That being said, Chase does a very good job of showing me most of what I want directly on the app.
Barclays has a very clean, modern interface that is quite attractive. All the information I need is front and center with the less used info is just one slide away. Features such as BT, Easy Pay, FICO Score, and Travel Notifications right there on the app.
The Okay: I find Amex to be clean in appearance but lacking in many options I know I can access via the website (such as Pay It, Plan It calculator).
The Bad: I only have one Citi card and it's the Best Buy one so I will reserve harsh judgement as I know co-branded cards with their own portal are not indicative of the lender overall. Offers sent via email are not visible on the app. I will say it bothers me to no end that I can't see recent/pending transactions nor can I set up automatic payments that won't deduct if there is no balance. ![]()
The Ugly: Wow. I can't believe this company that has so many different products offers such a terrible user experience. Now I only have 2 Synchrony cards but on both portals, the experience is awful. It's like something out of the 90's. Neither one can be accessed via an app (Texaco Chevron, Marvel) and both lack in common features and functionality. On the Marvel one specifically, there's absolutely no way to see past statements without signing up for email statements which I refuse to do. Besides this, it's not easy to way to see which purchases are tracking at 3% and which are at 1%. This should be quite an easy thing to offer but alas, it isn't. I get spammed with emails for offers on this Marvel subscription or club but do those offers appear anyone on their website? No.
I have credit cards from Citi, Chase, Discover, Capital One, HSBC, SDFCU, and Apple Card.
I agree about Discover's app and website being great, but I am currently an expat and I seldom use it. Of the ones I use frequently, I like Chase as well as any. I have five Chase cards.
Along with this, from what I've seen of Apple Card's app and website, I think it would deserve #1. However, I was just approved for it and I do not even have the card yet, so I have not used it. But what I've seen looks good, and pretty much all reviews are positive.
In short, I'd probably make the #1 spot a 3 way tie between Apple Card, Chase, and Discover. (Discover and especially Apple Card probably are objectively better than Chase, but due to my limited usage of those two I cannot give either of them the top spot.) Capital One would be #4, Citi and SDFCU would tie for #5, and last place goes to...
...my least favorite is (easily) HSBC. If I would rate them all in order, 1 - 7, from best to worst, I wouldn't even give HSBC the 7. I'd skip the next 93 numbers, and give it 100. Everything seems clunky, both in the app and online. Until recently, purchases wouldn't show up until a day or two later, not even as Pending. There was absolutely zero evidence of the purchase. However, that changed within the last month or so, and purchases now show up instantly. At the same time, it is our default card right now. I got it in December 2019. My wife and son are AUs. It is a flat 1.5% cash back card, with that being doubled the first year. So, it is 3% cash back for a couple months yet. I doubt we'll use it much, if at all, once the first year is past.
