Engagement Ring spread across multiple cards??

So I'm ready to pop the question.

Here's the thing..I've just gotten the CSP, Citi Hilton HHonors, and Arrival+ Barclaycard (all cards with decent sign up bonuses)

Honest question.  Do you guys feel it is tacky to spread the cost of an engagement ring between two or even three credit cards for the purpose of meeting bonus spending?  Is that frowned upon by the jewlery store (by society??lol) or is it even allowed?  I'm sorry, I'm very clueless about buying any type of jewlery.

If I went this route, would I be complicating matters in terms of warranty, returns, exchanges, etc.?  For example, do some Visa Sig/World Elite merchandise return perks require that the whole amount is put on the card?

Any guidance from the experienced in this department is appreciated.

Thanks!

Unless you announce "I'm splitting it for the bonus" no one would even know.   I'm sure jewlers are used to people buying things too expensive for the credit limit on one card, and so split it over several.

But your other point is important: many of the credit card protections do require that the entire cost of the item is charged to the card.  So decide if the chance of needing that outweighs meeting the bonus on more than one card.

Doesn't matter from a societal standpoint. The jeweler isn't going to call your to-be-fiancee when you propose and say, "Wait! Before you answer! You should know he used multiple cards to buy your ring!"

Have you picked out a ring yet? If not, check out Costco. Seriously, quality stuff there, and best return policy out there

+1

Don't think it's some cheapo fake diamonds. Some of the jewelery from my local Costco costs around $25,000. Smiley Surprised

Re: Engagement Ring spread across multiple cards??

First off, congratulations!

Splitting up an expensive purchase between a few credit cards isn't considered weird in this type of situation. Jewelers see it way more often than you think! Plus, they really couldn't care less, as long as the sale goes through and the cards aren't declined, lol. If your new cards have great signup bonuses that require you spend a set amount, then go for it. Just make sure you can eventually pay off those balances comfortably - that's what matters.

Like previous posters before me have said - the only part that gets tricky is the return policy. Although with each credit card purchase, you will receive a receipt for the specific amount charged on each card once you purchase the engagement ring. I would think as long as you kept all of those receipts, they would be able to credit back the amount listed on each receipt to each corresponding card. When it comes to fraud protection, you'll have to ask your credit card issuer about their policy on this.
